>>17310217 My initial reasoning for 3v3 rather than 6v6 when it came to this tournament was a number of things. First, in monotypes, it means that if you have a disadvantageous matchup, you only have to outmaneuver THREE pokemon rather than six. The other reasons were simple. Discouraging entry hazards, the element of surprise, and encouraging strange builds and plays since you would not be saddled with a useless gimmick mon for all fights(you could switch gimmicks, for instance, and both fights with the same roster of 6 could be significantly different).
Like, as a poison type, I nearly went with the idea of 3 of my guys being a rain team for shits and giggles.
I wanted to see some exotic shit, and moving away from established norms was a good way of doing it. All the videos I've seen have been highly interesting, and I can't say that things would have been improved by going 6v6.
Besides, GF is pushing the 3v3 thing pretty hard, like even in singleplayer with gym leaders/elite 4, and I am wondering if they are trying to phase out the roster of 6 concept gradually.
Nanaca 1418-7364-5522
>>17310612 It's the same team but not quite the same team; I'm guessing that your Crustle is a Shell Smash sweeper whereas mine is not, and Megacross vs regular Cross play pretty differently. Differing bulk on regular Scizor vs. Megazor really can make a huge difference, as regular Scizor can't survive a LO Fire Fang from Aerodactyl while Megazor actually does (from actual tourney experience).
In that sense we did run quite different Pokemon even though their species are the same.
But hey, you could also take things a different way maybe? If I manage to go far with this party it'll almost be like you did as well, in a sense.

Next time we do this we should have theme gyms rather than mono teams. Strict adherence to something like color, features, shapes, etc. Someone was doing a frog team recently. Luckily, there are a few pokes here and there that are either awful, bad, or mediocre because of stats, movepool, or abilities (or some combination). Most are easy to pick out with just a little research.
There are some superstars though. They all have great stats, movepools, and/or abilities that help them greatly against many teams. Water has a lot of representation because it is the most common type, after all.

>>17314921 But Tentacruel has a wonderful neutrality to Grass, which none of those other ones you mentioned do, which is why I suggested Tentacruel. I personally love him for his bulk, speed, and ability to actually dent some things.
I honestly find Black Sludge healing to work best, the way to use him is to drop toxic spikes, then get him the fuck out before the enemy can really respond. When he comes back in later, he can shit on your opponent's poisoned pokemon.
Ah the eternal debate. Slowbro or Slowking. I've been toying with a Slowbro @Assault Vest set lately. Just as a bulky revenge killer sort of thing. He gets a wonderful movepool and with AV his defenses essentially become 95/110/120-122(approx.) Slack Off is great and all but Regenerator makes this set possible, so long as you have the right team mates for him.
Vaporeon was my bro in gen V. I always ran Wish, Haze, Protect, and Hydro Pump. Haze was useful as fuck. I don't know how great it would be in today's meta, but it saved my ass a lot back in gen V.
I love water types, they'll always be my favourite.

>>17326719 And I believe this is a complete list of bonus points for disadvantageous matchups (if we are still going to do that):
Round1:
+1 Nanaca
+1 Seba
+1 Kyle/Nips
+1 Kieran
+1 Daniel
Round2:
+1 Heather
+1 Kyle/Nips
+1 Nightingale
Round3:
+1 Kyle/Nips
This has the potential to be the deciding factor for a few people getting/missing the top 8.
Personally, I don't think there should be bonus points for this, as we built our teams with the intent of trying to cover weaknesses. I.E. a fighting team may have been built to reap more points if they could have ignored carrying Rock moves to try to take on Flying in favor of carrying more effective moves against closer matchups.
Also there's a big difference between Steel being NVE against Water compared with Bug being weak to Flying or Fire. It can become a very complex issue, ("But Steel doesn't rely on their Steel type attacks that much, so it should only be .2 bonus points for their disadvantageous matchup against Water, and Bug is Weak AND NVE against Fire, so that should be worth more bonus points..."). You can extrapolate from there.
Does anyone know Mike's Round 2 score?

One thing that was briefly spoken about was the idea that if you wanted to replace a leader with their type, you could challenge with a mono and if you beat everyone you would take their spot.
But this is all suggestions at the moment. Details will be figured out afterwards.

Alex (Garbador, Kakuna, Toxicroak) 0044-2819-3586 !kIvjkVnuJQ Mon 13 Jan 2014 03:14:46 No. 17331856 Report Here are some quick ideas for how I personally think the League should work. Also, English is not my first Language, so please excuse any grammar errors. The League: The top 8 participants coming off of the finals will become the 8 Gym Leaders of the League. Challengers who wish to challenge the league may face leaders in whatever order they find most convenient. This will help to prevent contradictions in schedule amongst leaders and challengers, as well as keep challengers from being stuck on a leader due to an arbitrary order imposed by the league. The first Challenger to overcome all 8 leaders will become the League Champion. Subsequent challengers who defeat all 8 leaders may challenge the current Champion for a chance to overthrow him/her. The Champion is required to use the same team that they used to defeat the last Gym Leader they faced in the League for their Champion matches. Leaders: Leaders must use a team composed entirely of their respective type and include no legendary Pokemon. Gym Leaders are allowed to have one Mega Evolution on their team. However, Mega Pokemon used by Gym Leaders must have their specialized type while in their Mega Form (Such as Dragon using M-Ampharos or Flying Using M-Pinsir). If a gym leader uses a Pokemon like the ones listed in the example, they will be required to Mega Evolve upon entering the battle. Challengers: This is something that will need some discussion amongst the leaders, but here is a couple ideas I propose:>Challengers are allowed to use anything that is legal under flat rules, but they cannot make any substitutions to their team once they begin their League challenge. >Challengers will not be allowed to use any legendary Pokemon, but are allowed to make a single substitution to their team after every win/loss. >Challengers are not allowed to use legendaries or make substitutions to their teams, however, all Gym Leaders must state what Pokemon and sets they are going to be using.

Matches:
Matches will be held in a 6v6 fashion, with both players using their full team for each match. This will help Leaders to deal with counters used by challengers a lot easier than in a 3v3. Winners will be determined by a single match; if the challenger were to lose, they may schedule a rematch against the respective Gym Leader as the leader sees fit.

>>17331856 >>17331881 There's some things I disagree with:
Champ & Gym leaders should be allowed to switch up their team, or it will get boring for them very fast. I'm already pretty bored of my team and want to rotate some new Pokes in.
>New restrictions on Mega types and requiring evo on first turn Lol no thanks.
>allowing substitutions on challengers team That will make the challenge way too easy. A huge part of the challenge is building your team that can take on the challenge. Swapping in a purpose-built Poke to defeat each type is way too overpowered.
>Gym leaders must state their team Lol again, no.
>Matches 6v6 Nah, this is a 3v3 thing since the beginning, and it has to stay that way since we're using mono type teams.

Also I'm for a purely aesthetic gym leader ranking that doesn't necessarily have to have anything to do with the order they can be challenged in.
>>17331919 That was for this tournament though, since there were a lot of participants.
I can definitely see 6v6 working, especially if it's just one battle as opposed to three.
I will concede that 3v3 is more conducive for more interesting and unique strategies though.
Aniny mobile 3540-0120-0225
>>17331881 If it's 6vs6 singles, then a lot of options open up to me, but some other options drop off, too. I am okay with either 3vs3 or 6vs6. Smeargle, Lopunny, and Furfrou only really work in 6vs6.
I'm for challengers having no substitutions or legendaries, but us posting our teams. I don't think we have to go to the extreme of posting EVs and natures, but species and maybe items at most should be enough.
I'd probably change my team up every week (or every month) and post changes.

I feel like the element of surprise should be equal, because the gym leaders probably will have no idea what to expect of a challenger, and challengers should be on relatively equal footing. Although, even posting the leaders pokemon they will use may not be needed just because of the team preview, and knowing the type specialty might be enough.

Nobody wants to fight the guy with Terrakion, Heatran, Cressela, Suicune, Zapdos, and Latios, all of whom are allowed via Flat Rules.
Announcing our sets is not a good idea. We didn't know the entire movesets/spreads of any of the gym leaders we fought, neither should our opponents. They should have to overcome a challenge, not build a team that counters all of our sets.
We should keep it 3v3. Making it 6v6 so we can power through our opponent's counters for our type defeats the purpose of us beign gyms leaders that are supposed to be able to handle any challenge. Plus, that'll take a long time. Unless we're just doing single match rounds, of course, rather then best of three. Then, 6v6 is a little more justifiable.

>No Legendaries. Period. Fair enough.
>Challengers can register 7 Pokemon to use for the entire league, can only make ONE substitution to those 7 for the entire duration of their challenge I honestly cannot agree with substitutions of any kind. When you battle through the Elite 4, you don't get to use substitutions. If you want to make a substitution, you back out of the league challenge and start all over. I feel that that's the absolute most that we can accommodate for this challenge; substitutions allowed, but at the cost of the reset of your current challenge.
>Gym Leaders can use any 6 Pokemon within their type at any time This is good; it allows for fresh teams and constant variety in Gym battles.
>Gyms are challenged at any order This is for the best.
>All battles are either 3v3 or 6v6 Gym leader decides A strong consistent ruling is probably better here, I feel.
>Gym leaders can only state their Pokemon, not their sets There is really no purpose in this. You get to see the entire team in the team preview anyways; announcing your setup only takes difficulty out of the challenge. Plus, how do you deal with variable leader teams?
>Only Gym Leaders can use Mega-Evo's This is really something that could stand for a bit more debate. I feel that as a group we're the most divided on this.

>>17332278 >Champ can use any 6 Pokemon he wishes. No legends. >Champ can sub his Pokemon between matches as he sees fit I can't back this idea. The entire point of the champion battle is to fight against someone who was able to defeat all the gym leaders with the exact team they're using at the time; if you were to change it, it's not the champion's team anymore and just becomes a team used by the champion.
>ALL Battles must be scheduled A little strict, but I can see how it would help with general organizing.
>ALL Gym Leaders must take on at least ONE challenger per day, unless a good reason prevents them (Real Life Stuff/Nobody is challenging them) >If the former is the case, then the leader must appoint someone temporary head of their gym until their return >Above 2 rules DO NOT apply for the champion I don't think a "minimum challenger quota" is really necessary. Gym leaders accept battles on their own timing; if they are unable to take challenges a simple announcement or notice is enough. Likewise if they want to step down, though we would then have to find a permanent replacement.

A couple of notes. A "Gym Run" format is very taxing on gym leader's schedules. Not everyone is a NEET and may not appreciate having 10 scheduled matches per week. You need a way for people who are not interested in replacing gym leaders to have fun, and gym leaders should get the opportunity to have matches against each other, and the Gym Run format does both of those things poorly. Also gym leaders need the opportunity to rest and not accept challenges nonstop. A league with one or two official matches allowed weekly allows a number of people to be tracked at once, and allows for a little more restriction in what's going on(and allows you to track how many gym leaders a player has defeated). The advantage of the league scoring system in particular, is that gym leader runs are allowed to happen over a longer course of time, and may be broken up a little bit. The weekly turnaround also lets you give players the kindness of a weekly/biweekly substitution, so that nobody is locked into a team they don't want forever and ever. Some sort of compromise to allow players to switch types should also be allowed. It shouldn't be too difficult to set up some sort of registration form that autopopulates a spreadsheet and have one or two people go over reports on a weekly basis to keep standings updated. Challenges should be left up to a player's discretion, with the possibility of some sort of "obligation match" that is also highly suggested to be done every week.

>>17332378 >If you want to make a substitution, you back out of the league challenge and start all over. I agree strongly with this.
Challengers build their team for the whole challenge. If they find it's not up to snuff, they can change but have to start all over.
>>17332408 I said no to the new rules on mega types because there's no reason for them. The Poke has the type, it can be used on that team, plain and simple.
And no to requiring mega evolution on turn 1 because that's absurd. That's like requiring someone to use a certain move on a certain turn. The turn you mega-evo is a strategical decision.
The challengers know what type they're up against, that's enough. They're suppposed to be building a strong, well-rounded team, not a team designed to counter our sets.
>Plus, Gyms aren't supposed to be unbeatable, it's almost required that we lose. We're using mono teams, they're not. They have the upper hand, I believe that we'll be beaten often enough. And in the face of uncertainty, I feel we should err on the side of not getting stomped all over right off the bat. We can adjust fire to make the challenge a bit easier if necessary, but we don't want to make ourselves look like a bunch of bumbling chumps.

>>17332408 >You guys to understand that it's still pretty difficult for anybody to plan a team that is able to take on a possible 48 different Pokemon, right? But isn't that basically what we had to do?
And to top things off, even with the strictest rules on set announcement and substitutions the challenger still knows what 8 types he will go against, which is a big help in team building. All of us came in completely blind and left our matchups completely to luck, and were still able to come this far, using monotype teams to boot.
That's my take on the team announcement matter, anyways.

made specifically for this of course in a google docs and if someone wants to challenge them they have to go through the doc to send a challenge. So they can maybe pick and choose who they battle, or maybe go in order from first to last.

>>17332367 >That just seems a little unfair I can understand that.
>>17332378 >I honestly cannot agree with substitutions of any kind. When you battle through the Elite 4, you don't get to use substitutions. If you want to make a substitution, you back out of the league challenge and start all over. I feel that that's the absolute most that we can accommodate for this challenge; substitutions allowed, but at the cost of the reset of your current challenge. There's gym leaders? I thought it was 8 leaders and a champ. If there will be an elite 4, then so subs for them. You just pick 6 Pokemon.
I can see what you're saying about the subs, I think a little more about that as I sleep.
>A strong consistent ruling is probably better here, I feel. It can go either way I suppose
>There is really no purpose in this. You get to see the entire team in the team preview anyways; announcing your setup only takes difficulty out of the challenge. Plus, how do you deal with variable leader teams? Then they'll just see the team in the preview and nothing else.
>>17332498 > it's not the champion's team anymore and just becomes a team used by the champion. If they're the champ then I feel they've earned the right to be able to do this.
>if they are unable to take challenges a simple announcement or notice is enough. Likewise if they want to step down, though we would then have to find a permanent replacement. I see what you're saying, but if they don't want to step down, but will have to be away from taking any challengers for an extended amount of time, then they'd need to announce someone to temporarily take their place.
Frisbee [Flying] !xGitLuxURY
>>17332746 I think that's the plan. Keep a google doc with challenge info and the leader's emails so the challengers can coordinate battle scheduling with each leader.
We can also maintain a google doc tracking which challengers have beaten which leaders.

I stick by my decision that the champion's team needs to remain static in order to give a more authentic feel, for lack of a better expression.
Temporary gym leader subs for extended periods of time are definitely something that needs to be considered, now that you explained it in a little more detail. We'll just need to evaluate how long would consititute "extended periods". A week?
Also we're past the bump limit; we'll need a new thread soon.

Challengers shouldn't be barred from using Megas. For what pvrpose? We bar legendaries because they have an elite stigma 'round about them, and many of them are too strong. It would be "annoying." No one disagrees with this. Megas are a new thing: take an old pokemon and make it better (except for MAlakazam & MTyranitar who are just kinda different). They're flashy, people love them, they make you feel good when you use them. If I'm gonna be allowed to use MKangaskhan (and at times I will), why can't my opponent? You make all these points about "not making the challenge too hard," and then you ban Megas and make it harder for them...?

>>17332938 If it's fairness we're talking about though, I feel that a static champion team would actually help with that. When challengers come in, are champions privy to information about their team setup? If they are, then in the case that they're allowed to switch up their team as they see fit only allows them to build teams that serve as dedicated counters to the challenger's. I can't say that's fair to the challenger.
The challenger knows the types of the 8 leaders he fights, which will be an asset to him in teambuilding. To throw in the champion as a complete wildcard and give him no chance of preparing for it (and actually giving an upper hand to the champion instead) is a huge, possibly unappreciated spike in difficulty.

>>17332914 And I'll stick by letting the Champ being able to change at will. Or we can just use my original sub idea and apply it to the champ.
I feel as if a week would count, wouldn't want challengers to be stuck with 7 badges for a week. If the leader makes an unexpected early return, then they immediately take back their spot, unless stated otherwise by said gym leader.

If the Pokemon loses the type when he mega evolves, than he's obviously no longer part of that type, there for, your team no longer share a common type. That's almost like allowing a gym to have a "wild card" Poke that is outside of their type. Also, if you read what I typed, a required evolution is only placed on Pokes that need to mega evolve to assume the gym type (Like Ampharos becoming a dragon).
Out of all the gyms, I'd expect you to complain the least, as your type has the largest type combination out of any type.
>>17332623 That's fair.
But what happens when a Challenger gets stuck on a gym that he cannot beat? Does he have to make a new team to re challenge the league from square one due to a single road block?

But Gym leaders should be fine with switching up their team.
I think the Champ vs potential-new-Champ battles should be epic 6v6 showdowns, as they have well-rounded non-mono teams. But I completely understand if they prefer to stick with 3v3 since that's really how they built their team to fight in the first place.
