It's rough when I thought Scrafty finally rounded out my mono-fighting team in 5th gen, but now with Fairies and the distribution of Fairy TMs on pokemon, he's my biggest liability now. My Scrafty now fears Psychics.

Yeah, seriously. Dark typing feels like a huge liability now. It was never a top-tier typing, and now its fucking awful. Fighting was a bit OP, so I don't mind what happened there, but still. Dragons now run unchecked through the metagame, and I don't feel like I can bring my Tyranitar anywhere anymore.

Dragon is a powerful type because over half the fully evolved Dragons are 600+ BST mons with great movepools. It was never the type itself that was the problem, so of course introducing a new type to counter it wasn't going to hurt it that much.

Actually, Dark became the only type to resist Ghost (besides Normal), meaning defensive dark types like Mandibuzz became way more popular.

An additional weakness isn't that massive of a neuter, especially when you see so few offensive fairies. Darks already had weaknesses like Fighting, which allowed things like Gengar to nail them with Focus Blast.

On paper, Dark got an additional weakness, but now that steel get nerfed Dark is a valuable defensive type against things like Aegislash. Of course this is pretty much only a buff to Mandibuzz, being the only Dark type that doesn't get destroyed by Sacred Sword (besides Drapion and Skuntank, who are both a lot less bulky.)

Do you use a normal type on your team? Chances are you don't, since it sucks. If so, your team has NO resistance against Ghost. Ghost is the GOAT typing this gen, especially ever since M-Kangaskhan was banned. Also, with the fighting nerf, you don't need to worry about them as much outside of Conkeldurr.

Dark type is even better offensively. Steel was the GOAT typing last gen. Now it hits through it. Furthermore, Knock Off was buffed. Now you have a common move given to dark types that deals 65 damage, with a 1.5x damage bonus if the target holds an item, AND it removes the opponent Pokemon's item. That's 98 base damage with a pretty fucking good secondary effect.

You think people are using Mandibuzz SOLELY for Defog or the Overcoat buff? No, Latias and Skarmory would have been better Defoggers in Gen 5, and Overcoat is very situational.

Pic related, he's currently reaping the rewards of being a dark type for all the reasons above. His usage is sharply increasing because people are realizing how much better dark type is. The only dark types who suffered this gen were Scrafty, Hydreigon, and Tyranitar (although the last is good).

You're right of course that it got shafted pretty hard directly, but other changes shifted the metagame in Dark's favor. Fighting types are rare thanks to Dazzling Gleam and Talonflame scaring things off, so Dark doesn't have to fear them. Knock off got an amazingly overpower buff, and now makes STAB Knock Off possibly the best move in the game. Steel no longer counters Ghost, so Dark types are better as a check for Ghost type attackers. More super powerful Physical attackers so Foul Play is a thing now. Lastly, in a game of super priority, being able to throw in STAB Sucker Punches is a god-send. Dark as an attacking type benefit much more than defensive, but both got some reasonable buffs.

This is all before rocks, and those are the most viable fairy types. The most threatening response to the king is Azumarill, who's water typing does pose a threat. However, Nidoking does outspeed him by default, and this is how Azumarill responds in a 1 on 1 situation:

252+ Atk Huge Power Azumarill Aqua Jet vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Nidoking: 200-236 (65.7 - 77.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Pretty fucking strong. Keep rocks up and your opponent has problems, as Nidokings 2HKOs quickly turn into OHKOs.

Yeah, I used Bisharp as an example since his usage has sharply been increasingly lately.

I also forgot to mention that it seemed like some of the other dark types are getting their own little buffs. Aside from Mandibuzz and Bisharp, Crawdaunt got a Crabhammer buff, and Aqua Jet and Switcheroo as new moves. Weavile got Icicle Crash as an egg move. Absol got a pretty decent mega.

All the good fairies have a secondary typing, aside from Sylveon, giving them weaknesses like Electric and Grass (Azumarill,) Fire and Ground (Mawile, Klefki,) Rock, Electric and Ice (Togekiss.) Even the decent Fairies have a second typing, like Gardevoir (Ghost.) All those weaknesses are a lot easier to fit on a team than fucking Steel or Poison.

Sticky Web has to poor distribution to fit on most teams, and adding a mon specifically for it seems wasted thanks to defoggers. (Man do I fuckig wish Ariados had any good stats.) Tailwind has a similar problem. Anything that can run it has better options, at least as far as my team. Besides, this gen seems to target out prioritizing your opponent rather than outspending them directly.

Fairy is objectively the best type to have in the game right now. It's a great offensive typing and it's weaknesses are practically non-existent. It looks like shit because there's practically no good fairy Pokemon but god help us the day we get a good fairy Pokemon.

That's how some stories generally start, right? Dragon terrorizes some mythological society of a sort. I'm sure they've terrorized firires somewhere before. But how about Fairies (and only Fairies) killing Dragons?

It used to be a thing back in Gen 4, when walls were always dedicated to either Physical or Special hits, aside from a few exceptions like Suicune and Creaselia. The idea was to be able to wreck all of Metagross's normal counters with Special attacks, while still dealing massive damage to anything else with physical.

I think Clawitzer is cool, but his design was really created around a single competitive niche that makes any other set inferior. At least it's explainable that he learns cannon moves because of his cannon. Cincinno learns 6 moves from level-up. 3 of them are multi-hit. 2 of then make nonsense whatsoever, but are GF's attaboy of helping the meta game. Sylveon is a good special tank and cleric. Pretty much Vaporeon but better typing and marginally less physical bulk. Can also hit hard with Pixilate Hyper Voice
Vaporeon is still pretty good
Espeon has Magic Bounce, is really fast and has good special attack
Jolteon is still sanic fast and a decent special attacker
Umbreon is still really bulky
Flareon got a move that allows it to kill itself faster
Leafon RIP ;_;7 weakness policy set might work, 130 base def.

Can somebody actually run some calcs of common Fairy attacks against Dragons? Maybe it's just me who is thinking this but Fairy typing is still nothing compared to Ice type attacks. Ice type attacks are 4x Super Effective against MOST ---- MOTHERFUCKING MOST ---- dragons. Most ---- MOTHER FUCKING MOST ---- 2x Super Effective moves don't even come close to 1hko'ing dragons because they have natural bulk. Throwing a Roseli Berry on a dragon turns a fairy type attack into SET UP FODDER. Are the people complaining about Fairy types really this retarded?

All of this supports the claims that Dark and Fighting types got seriously nerfed. Personally, I think setting up the Dark and Fighting types to be stronger against the popular Steel types is a tactical decision to make Dragon types even stronger than they were in 5th generation. Shit, I'm almost tempted to say that if you can't see that then you shouldn't be criticizing anything and just go stuff your head in the toilet or something.

The one thing I'm not too sure about is how many dragons get Poison Jab. I know that Garchomp does and he naturally outspeeds ALL fairies so if you're switching a fairy in on him and he uses Swords Dance, your shit is about to get fucked to gravy.

The immunity or resistance makes more sense. Just know that if Normal gets a second immunity, it needs a second weakness, too. I'd argue that Normal should be weak to Dragon, because a normal creature is getting #rekt by a mythical beast of power and might, and because the possibility of Dragons getting a 4x on something would justify Ice getting that cool Dragon resist, too.

Other type chart changes I want are Water being weak to Poison, Psychic resisting Fairy, Ice resisting Water, and Electric being weak to Dark because blackouts and/or sabotage. How many power plants have been downed by evil teams in Pokemon?

Of course, it'd be hard for the dark type to suck any more, so you'd have to give it a number of resistances and strengths to make up for this and what it lost to the new fairy type.

Dark is more about fighting unfairly than it is about literal darkness. That's why most Dark-type attacks have quirky secondary effects.
Besides, Fairy is the damaging light type. Electric only has one weakness right now, and those mono-weak types don't sit well with me.

Which reminds me, Psychic should get that SE on Fairy, too.

They should have added light/saint type. Resistant to and super effective against dragon, no other strengths or weaknesses.

The whole fairy type is fucking mess, it feels like it's super effective and resistant to just whatever Game Freak thought would balance it. All these pokes that we knew since gen1 suddenly changing resistances feels so fucking weird, I can't get used to it.

You're selling Steel offense a bit short. At the very least, it sees frequent use on walls that don't want to be Taunt bait.

Lots of people have the gen five mentality that shit needs to be sanic fast.

Gen six is all about bulky offense, so having so-so speed isn't really a big deal. Plus 85, while nothing amazing, definitely isn't a snails pace.

Fairy and Gen 6 as a whole was extremely rushed.

Dragon/psychic doesnt exist outside of Legendaries at the moment, but since both Psychic and Fairy are at the core of Pokemon's few rebalances, (though psychic was outright broken, not just overpowered, due to Ghost and bug being so awful in gen 1 and the immunity to ghost) I think they were too gunshy of making Psychic dominate the type intended to balance the game further.
I expect a second overhaul for gen 7, or maybe even mid-generation, fixing fairy.

Once we get a good fairy pokemon (Xerneas), it'll be so insanely dominating of a type, you wont stop seeing it everywhere. Florges and Mega-mawile qualify, but lack overall versatility due to movepools/physical defense for the former and HP and speed on the latter.

Its attack got buffed to base 100 so its actually got some massively powerful Earthquakes and Poison Jab/Megahorns now.

Though Poison Point would have to be run on a physical set.
Coming from the person who ran four consecutive Marowaks, you also have natures to play with. I.e., my BW2 marowak was +Speed to outspeed whatever opposing slow-ish pokemon I could. It worked well, but my Y Marowak has +Sp. Def with 255 Sp. Def EVs. Even non-STAB Surfs and Clawitzer's Water Pulse fail to make a OHKO and im much more proud of it.
