How do I start building a team?

I've never really battled before, and I don't know anything about how competitive Pokemon battling works. Are there any tips to building a decent team?

But if they're Pokemon you like, then go for it.If you're into Tier lists, look them up and build a team accordingly, pick and choose, use your favorites. What ever your style is, go with it. I use a lot of the pokemon >>17331197 mentioned, simply because they do well. But I'll throw in Pokemon like Miltank, Ludicolo, Machamp, etc. It all depends on how comfortable you are with that pokemon, and practice with said team.

You can try to put together a team dedicated to support a single strategy, or you can make a balanced team in which all pokemon play a different role, cover each other's weaknesses, etc. Different play styles work for different people. Also watch battles on pokemon showdown, it also builds your notion of the meta.

Make a core of 1-2 Pokemon you want to use, mold the rest of your team around their weaknesses and strengths.

Pick a Pokémon you like, build everything else around that. That's what I always do. Cover his weaknesses, then cover the new weaknesses, etc.

Its pretty balanced due to Ubers and some OU being lower leveled and having nerfed move sets.

Oh hey, that's new.

However, generation doesn't matter, a random battle full of random mons that include ubers is not what you should base the meta on. I had 4-5 straight gen 5 random losses in a row because the opponent got OP legendaries that I couldn't kill with regional NFEs. Higher level doesn't help at all.

OP, most people here are right, but it probably didn't help you a lot. Here's what you want to do for starters:
Pick 2 defensive/utility pokémon that you like, one more specially defensive and the other more physically.

Pick 2 Physical attackers, make sure they can hit what the other can't and that both don't need set up time. Make sure you have one pokemon that can just touchdown and lay the hurt.

Pick 2 Special attackers, same as before.

Check your chosen team for galring weaknesses, like no resistances to grass while having 4 weaknesses to it. Go to smogon, check the top 10 pokémon and make sure you have a plan for when they come in.

Play this team and learn what is wrong with it through playing. Change what you don't like to things you like better and keep trying. After a while you will learn a few more tricks about teambuilding to the point you can just let go of the above team model and try other things. This is probably the easiest way to build something decent.

Pretty much what this guy said. Also its good to use sources like Smogon as tools and supplements, rather than taking their word as law and just slapping together the 6 most OU mons like a lot of beginning players do. You have to learn WHY something is popular and HOW it's effective, and then if you choose not to use it then how to prepare for it.

Also if you plan on going outside of simulators, don't EVER shy away from what people would consider "cheap tactics" since VGC/ingame rules have no clauses outside of no same items and no same pokemon.
Evasion boosting/accuraccy dropping hax is frowned upon in many circles but in my opinion its just simply a riskier way to play since you are ultimately devoting most of your strategy to chance. The same thing can also apply to Sleep spamming but more reliable.
