In my opinion pokemon only did better because Bandai honestly sucked at making games back in the 90's.
Their bread and butter was and still is action figures and other toy products; you all are forgetting that the Digimon are actually just tamagachi's readopted for boys.
Plus Pokemon had Nintendo's backing which covers a wide variety of demographics.
