I've heard that there were rumors before GSC that you could get Nidoking and Nidoqueen to breed some sort of God Pokemon or something.
Though I really don't know either.

This, you already have pokemon with different graphics for male/female (Frillish/Jellicent, Unfezant), you have pokemon with different evolutions based on Male/Female (Kirlia, Snorunt, Burmy). A pokemon family with different base stats depending on male/female is just another version of that sort of stuff.
