I tried to get return to do more damage by whipping my pokemon more, but it just wasn't working out. Frustration has been doing wonders though.

Friendship value is separate from affection in Pokemon Amie, and friendship evolutions + moves like Return are not influenced in any way by Pokemon Amie.

What would be the point of that?
Either a) in order to increase happiness, you now HAVE to force-feed your pokemon poffins or whatever shit is food the next gen, or b) you have get into 20 fights in which your pokemon loses before even starting to actually train it.

friendship seems a lot easier in X/Y if you ask me. One massage, throw a Soothe Bell on the target, give him one of those friendship bags from super training if you have em, take him on a run through one of the Lumiose restaurants, he'll be pretty close to maximum happiness, if not maxed out

Radius of the Prism Tower ring is about 200 steps. Bike can do a full loop in about 12 seconds. Assuming happiness works the same way it did in gen 5, this means it'll take 15-20 minutes of biking around the Tower to take a Pokemon at 0 happiness and get it to max.
