So has anyone done a run with the exp share off?
How much harder is it?

I picked up X second hand and this time I'm trying to make my runthrough an actual challenge, but without adding too many bizarre rules. When I went through Y I practically never died.

Pick one.

Turning it off just makes it as much of a grindfest as the other games. If you want any sort of fun out of the game, I recommend turning Exp. Share on, then dumping your entire team before every gym battle and using a new team for each one. Makes it a lot of fun, keeps you on your toes, and lets you use a lot more Pokemon than you would in the average playthrough. I did that for my second play and had a blast.

Turn off EXP.Share.
Set Battle mode to "Set".

Best way to play in my opinion.

You'll be level 50-55 at the champion if you did not grind, it turns into another game. Just don't grind.

I didn't lose once in Y and never used exp share until post game to mass evolve low level pokemon. The game isn't hard because it is made for children.
