Well i just assumed that moves like firepunch, ice fang, slash and similar always made contact because the mon used his own limbs to attack.
moves like earthquake and rock slide were not physical because used something "outside" of the pokèmon
Also beat up does not make "contact", because the pokèmon using it is calling all his friends in the trainer's party to beat up the target.
