Given that it *is* an independent seller at most of these events, TPCI only get a small percentage of the profit, compared with the thousands of dollars that go into prizes, staff, organisation and rooms for the tournaments.
VGC is viable only because it raises awareness and popularity of the games in general, the events themselves are run at a massive loss.
The only possible exception is the world championships, where the shop is run by Pokémon Centre staff, and has exclusive items which sell for tonnes on eBay, so they are actually busy.
