As for personal pass times, battling maybe an inportent part of Pokemon, but the main thin is to collect all the Pokemon, Battling is only there to increase he level of the Pokemon that need to Evolve, in which you needn't rely on battling with other people when wild Pokemon can do the job.
The fact that each Pokemon has a different Pokedex for each language will entice any and all collectors into trying to get each Pokemon from every Country
