Of course not, because that was a different version of an already existing system marketed to people that weren't a part of the demographic that would immediately want to buy a DSi or DS lite.
Parents are more willing to buy a 2DS for their children than a system that looks oh-so-breakable and has a feature that could damage the development of their eyes. Diehard fans of specific series (Pokemon, SMT, Fire Emblem, SSB, etc.) will buy the cheap system to get their fix. It's a strategy that casts a wider net over the market, and Nintendo has been successful with it for almost two decades.
So no, it's not a failure because you don't want to buy it.
