For the most part, I have the type chart memorized, but I occasionally have to think about whether or not Ground and Rock resist Bug. I guess I just assume that everything resists it because it's a terrible type.

Also as a kid, I thought Special Attack was what STAB moves damage were based on, and the rest was determined by Attack. So I wouldn't have any STAB moves on a Gyrados.

I've been playing competitive pokemon for more than a year now and I've played pokemon games since I was little and only yesterday I discovered Poison was NVE against Rock.

Poison is one of the best defensive typings, nig. There's just a lack of notoriously good pokemon.
Bug, on the other side, has many good pokemon and great utility even if it's shit on the typing chart, if it was actually good it'd be broken.

Ice, on the other side, is completely fucked, even when it's one of the best offensive typings. But spamming Ice types in doubles works.

Only about a week ago did i discover Dragonite was Dragon/Flying. I got into the double-battle with Lance and Clair in Soul Silver, and they were 10 levels over so I was struggling to find a Pokemon that would just hit them both at the same time.

I took out a Tyranitar and used earthquake.

I figured it was just an ability like Levitate, but I was startled when I used rock throw and it was super effective. I googled Dragonite after the battle and was shocked.

(also thought fighting was super effective against bug because "punches squish"/ electric did no damage on steel)

I don't know if it's the real reason, one of the strategy guides for Stadium stated that Dragon was weak to Fighting several times. It also insisted that dual-types only get x1.25 STAB, and that Normal types got none at all. Most Pokemon guides were clusterfucks at the time though.
