How exactly does one battle competitively in-game? I see so many breeding threads, FS threads and such yet I'm starting to contemplate what's the point if Pokemon Showdown exists?

Is it for Battle Maison or Wi-fi ranked, restricted game modes where you're only allowed a 3 mon party, and Mega Mom and Mega Chicken run rampant? Why exactly?
