See: aggron is a classic example of Adorable - to - deadly evolution done correctly.
Most players who like Aggron, probably caught a wild Aron.
It's tiny, but had character. And a very solid head. With a respectable attack and defense stat, and either a sturdy ability or immunity to recoil, they made great little physical tanks.
Then, evolution...
Suddenly tiny tank looks more like a a steel-backed dinosaur. his attack, defense, and HP all skyrocket (from a player's perspective, smogon be damned) and he's a good little powerhouse. Sure, he's weak to water and ground, and fighting moves are practically doom... if you have sturdy, you have plenty of time to find d out if your enemy has a super effective move during gameplay.
And then.. he evolves again...
It's a goddamn steel-belted Kaiju! He looks like he just stomped off a Godzilla movie! His physical defense is fantastic, his attack is damn good too... So what of he's vulnerable to three types? His physical defenses are enough to keep him alive. and there's almost no fighting special sweepers, just switch out when you smell a earthquake or Hydro pump coming and go smash everything else!
And so, you hold on to him, he stays in your party until you hit the fighting gym... and then... you have to train up a psychic or something... so he gets left behind a bit...
and the psychic has a better move pool than he does, so you're having fun playing with that.
But he was good when you used him. Good when you needed him... and maybe you'll teach him an HM and have him tag along with the party for a while... gain some levels... definitely be on your alt-team.
He's not perfect, but he's cool looking, and has a clear identity
