I'm not exactly secret about it. I pretty much treat it the same as homosexuality. I don't really care if people know I like it or not, but I don't go around shoving it in people's faces. If, for some reason, someone asked, I'd be open about it. If they don't like that I'm interested in it, it doesn't matter to me and hey, they were the ones who asked.
>>17730780 It's one of the most popular video game series in the world. The problem is, it is mostly popular among children, and most non-children who play it are manchildren and neckbeards, and college students. Aside from the college students - who get a pass because it's college, everyone's doing weird shit - neither of these are seen as mature or respectable. That's largely where the taboo comes from. Also, video games are generally seen as "for children" in modern society, except Angry Birds for some reason. That crappy smartphone app is apparently immune to criticism.

What if you just silently watch the person playing and try to show interest, but say nothing afterwards unless the person acknowledges you? That's usually how I go. Just the fact that you're watching and the other person notices interest will be enough if they do care, while if they didn't care, saying 'hi' or approaching them in any way wouldn't have broken the ice in the first place.
I take that approach because usually I'm not that good at starting socialization and I'm aware of it, so I let the other person start it with a little hint, but without seeming too awkward or like a fucking stalker. If I notice they are not interested, I will already try to not even look at what they're playing in the first place.

However, just to clarify, most of the time it seems like, if you take the people who pull out a console in the middle of a crowd, and those who scorn at anyone who likes anything unacceptable socially, the latter are much more vocal or noticeable. Because of that, people who are in the middle of those two groups will obviously go against them, rather than go for the ones who are too comfortable with what they like precisely because they are a minority, so it becomes a non-issue.

The difference is having your game on a multipurpose device, and also
because it's casual. Seriously, one of the reasons nobody shits on you for playing Angry birds while you wait in line or whatever is that it's really fucking easy to pick up and put down at a moment's notice, which is ideal when you're up and about. Dedicated gaming systems are best used for public play when you actually have significant forced downtime, like on public transportation. Listen kids, if you whip out pokemon in public and you're a grown man you're going to be seen differently. You'll be seen as some sort of virgin weirdo in our society, which you likely are but you'll claim that's unfair. But it's true. Taking a phone out in public is accepted because that's what majority of people do. They'll dick around on the Internet or play some app. Taking out a 3DS is a whole different scenario. Normal people probably wouldn't want to associate with you. As one Anon said you'll look like some massive autist with ADD problems that can't leave the house without his vidya games.

Just the other day we were at lunch and she was seeing how many Pokemon she could name and she got up to, like, 40. She was naming some pretty obscure ones too. My parents known and have always known. My friends and family know. I only have two or three friends that still play the game, though. As for 'off the internet' experiences in the community, nothing too much.. Once every two months these college kids come in with the 3DSs to the restaurant I work at and when I'm their server I make small talk about random Pokemon geekyness. The last conversation we had was about Pokemon bank and how frustrating it was to see Japan handing out things like Chimchars and the like. Normal people… nothing too weird.

I'm 19 and I'm about to head into my second year of uni, and I'm relatively confident playing in public so long as the situation doesn't inconvenience anyone around me. I'm really quite antisocial and don't like having to speak with my classmates when I'm not in class, so I like to bring my 3DS and just sit around campus playing it in my spare time. Now, I don't care that people might look at me and comment that it's a bit childish that I'm playing Pokemon, but it's due to the fact that I am a grill :^) I get a bit anxious about being seen playing in public. Not to toot my own horn but I am certainly not unattractive, so it's a little worrying to think that some people might see it as me trying to be a gamer gurl!! xD :3 The last thing I want is for people to see me and think I'm only playing to get attention, because nothing grinds my gears more than girls who desperately scramble to show off how "cool" and "interesting" they are because they're into video games. My university is full of people like that, and it's frustrating to see them getting praised for just literally being interested in something. But, in contrast to what some people have been saying: I'm actually just waiting for some qt3.14 to talk to me about Pokemon. It really is the greatest ice breaker for me personally. I don't play it out in public because usually I have other things to do at those times or I'm walking non-stop so I can't really play. But at college I play whenever there's a break. It's a good way of meeting people with similar interests too, with streetpass and all.

I play what I want when I want because I'm a god damn adult and the best part about being an adult is being able to do whatever the fuck you want. In community college I was playing Pokemon Emerald on the couch in the commons area when 3 large turbo-ghetto black men walked up to me all intimidating-like askin' "hey man what you playin'" I looked right at them and said "Pokemon." They immediately started chimping out and then, to my surprise, they did that sideways hoodrat high-five with me and we started talking about our favorite Pokemon. After socializing for a minute they walked off smiling and waving. I have never been more confused in my life.

>>17735733 I disagree. There are times where I play it in public and I've got people older than me walking up to me asking what I've got to trade, or what game I'm playing.

>Chistmas Day >Sister and her family visited us >Her husband (a typical case of alpha male) was playing a shitty game at his phone after lunch instead of having a conversation Not only retarted but rude as well. It's like he saying "I'm too bored and asshole to socialize, I prefer playing with my phone". It's not like he's a 10 years old who visits his relatives which they don't have any kids to play with.

It's not that I'm ashamed or actively conceal it, it's just everyone I know is a total judgmental 2 faced faggot and I can't wait to move. Imagine the way /b/tards would react if you told them you played pokemon. That is how everyone here is about EVERYTHING. Oh, you're in college? good shit faggot you're a piece of government cocksucking crap. Oh, you're single? haha neck beard! (I'm actually neither of these things) YOU PLAY POKEMANS!HAHAHWUITWEHTUSHT WUT R U 5?! This is generally the type of shit that goes on. My closest friends know, it's not a secret at all, but I really only keep a tight circle of about 10 people and only 2 of them give a shit / know because I've not really bothered to tell anyone else. It'd be like telling someone about playing WoW or any other game that doesn't care. I'm born raised and stuck in one of the most passive aggressive (voted 17th meanest cities in the world) [Shout out to Albany, NY!] so I'm sure this is not the paradigm for many...but for me it's shit. I'm 22 and recently got into mildly competitive (mostly just rusing showdown with showderp (oh god the cancer...) but past that, I don't really play much anymore.
