Let's imagine for a second that mega-evolutions are just a gen VI thing, and in gen VII the whole idea is thrown off the table. No megas anymore.
What would be the one mega that you wouldn't be able to live without anymore?

Mega Lucario, especially. My Mega Scizor could continue to function without the extra evolution but my Mega Lucario was built around going Mega and having that ability switch.

I really, really love Mega-Gengar and Mega-Banette.

Seeing as how I never used Mega-Gengar for that bullshit perish song stuff, he was basically just an amazing ghost. Mega-Banette was pretty much necessary to turn one of my favorite shitmon into a pretty badass fellow.

I never liked mega-banette, from a design standpoint.
I've always liked banette in the fact that it's simple. It's a cursed doll, whose energy would escape if that zipper it has for a mouth was to open. So I was expecting pic related.
What do we get?
The same idea, done wrong. Dozens of zippers out of fucking nowhere, just barely revealing the thing.
It could have been so much better but they blew it.

GF has a funny way of defenestrating all their old ideas each generation, part of the reason I try not to get attached to mega-evolutions.

That being said, Mega Mawile. Wanted to use it for a long time, and the mega-evo finally made it viable.
Maybe MegaCharizard-Y too, just because it's sexy.

Oddly enough...

Mega Aerodactyl. Bred one in 7 eggs, and since then has been more used for the Maison for me than MegaMom. Plus she has helped me get to my highest record of 41 ;~;, and can sweep pretty hard with even just one Hone Claws.

Second would be Medicham. Simply cause first Mega.

Mega Absol. Sure, it doesn't have as much raw power or bulk as a lot of Megas, but I love it both for its simplicity in design and the potential for some fun sets. Also one of my favourite Pokémon, so the extra usability is a godsend.

It packs a really strong Sucker Punch which thwarts most things that don't resist it or out-prioritize it, it has an even stronger Pursuit than before, it has enough Special Attack to go mixed (particularly as a Shell Smash recipient) and of course bounces hazards and status off when you pull some good predictions.

It can be tricky to get it in or really pull off a sweep without dual screening and/or nabbing a Baton Passed boost/Swords Dance, but it's fun when you manage it.

Imo, it would only work for a few exceptions, given that you would also have to exclude legendaries and those that just do not need a mega, or aren't completely overpowered because of it. Also those whose design actually works as an evolution, rather than the thing just getting a bunch of cosmetic appendages like m-Tyranitar
tl;dr:
I'd be ok with m-Abomasnow, m-Mawile, m-Heracross, m-Medicham, m-Pinsir and m-Kangaskhan (if they worked around a gimmick by which that baby eventually grows into another Kangaskhan).
