Probably just got discouraged, or their whole strategy or even hope of countering your team relied on the pokemon you just disabled/KO'd. Since the queue times for showdown are pretty much instantaneous, there's no reason to stick around if you don't care about your personal rating when you could just get a different match where you won't be fighting uphill the entire battle.
