It is in a weird way, but as a previous anon said before: Breloom is a better representation of a kangaroo.

In the end Pokemon are supposed to be Pocket Monsters. Both Kangaskhan and Breloom possess kangaroo elements, but each has been interpreted in a different way. Breloom has a mushroom motif while Kangaskhan has a protective mother animal motif. I figured they used a kangaroo as a base for Kangaskhan because they are an easily recognizable marsupial that carries their young in a pouch.

So it was translated as Kanga(kangaroo)+khan(Mongol ruler)
Also it's german name is Kangama (kangaroo+mama), not so good but more accurate
