You can't possibly be prepared for everything with a team that has good synergy, if you could everybody would run the same team. Want I find useful is first I decide the strategy I want to win by then build around that throwing in counters where needed, it's all about picking a choosing really.

Things like Gliscor or Flame Orb Conkeldurr, since they already have a status, are good status absorbers. Leech Seed is annoying but not crippling. You can also just use Heal Bell.

At any rate, off the top of my head Mandibuzz fits the phazer (whirlwind is mostly a waste though,) hazard remover, knock off-er, dragon control (checks most dragon dancers due to foul play and bulk,) flying type, doesn't give a fuck about T-Wave, immune to powder moves, and tanks any normal attacker (fucking what) that's not Kangaskhan. So that's eight of your things covered, or seven because paralysis can be annoying.

I've been literally running Smogon: the team and it came a bit of a surprise how quickly and consistenly I've raised my ranking. Just because everyone and their mother knows what your Pokémon can do does not make them bad, they can counter 1-2 overpowered Pokémon, but not a whole team.

You'll hit a wall eventually where running smogon the team doesn't work anymore because everybody is prepared for it. Honestly Megamon and Talonlame don't even scare me anymore, I simply put a pokemon on my team that counters both of them so when I see them in team preview in to the fight he goes and those two are rendered useless, then my other two pokemon I have freed up to deal with whatever smogon shit the guy is running.

Start with a core. These are usually two pokemon your team revolves around. Usually involve walls.

Maybe a sweeper/physical attacker next.
Then maybe a special attacker. They should probably have access to stat boosting moves if they aren't strong enough
Next, hazard setter/hazard remover.

Then add one more pokemon in whichever area is the weakest and BAM you have a team

nope

Here is a tip: instead of building around TYPES, build around THREATS that plague your tier (or common shit on battlespot if thats your thing) and plan for them.
Otherwise you may be prepared for the game mechanics but not the pokemon themselves.
