Don't know where you guys live, but when I lived in Kansas and Texas I was actually made fun of for understanding evolution and being an atheist. My teachers would spend as little time as possible teaching it and everyone just jacked off during the lessons because, "It's a trick from the devil" or "That's not what the Bible says". Those were actual reasons given by my classmates as to why they didn't believe in evolution.
Also, despite the fact that I'm living in Oregon now and it's much better I still am surrounded by people claiming the Bible is the ultimate truth and evolution can't be real because monkeys don't suddenly turn into humans. Fact of the matter is, most of America is ignorant about a lot of things science.
