Ranking on the ladder doesn't mean shit, it only shows how much you know about the current metagame and how to counter it.
For example, late Gen 5 I was using a Terrakion/Garchomp core. I was running a lot Sp.Atk with Ice Gem on Garchomp with HP Ice/Fire Blast/EQ/Dragon claw, it took out every Terrakion check, Skarmory, Donphan, Genesect, Landorus-T, Forretress, Gliswhore etc.
I topped the ladder a few times, but not because I'm good at the game, it was because I play a lot and know how dumb people on Showdown is.
