I want to start competitive battling and team building but have no idea where to start. How can you tell when a team compliments each other? I've already searched guides and stuff on how to EV train but i dont know what pokemons to use. Please help.

dont run cookie cutter teams, have of online battling is prediction and people switching mons non stop, so you have to use that to your advantage, run an aggresive gliscor instead of a sub/stall one, bulky smogonbird with WoW and leftovers, shit like that

personally i take my 3 favorite mons, make them as competitively viable as possible then get three mons to compliment them

Just choose any 6 Pokémon you like, at all, research sets of them, breed/train them as needed, test them in competitive battling online, replace moves/Pokémon that aren't working so well with improved ones and just keep doing this until you end up with a competent team.

That's the best way to make a team that is uniquely yours. It might not be the best team ever but once you get better at battling you'll be able to make a really good team from scratch quite quickly anyway. It's all trial and error, really, so you may as well pick Pokémon you like.

Alternatively, just find one on Smogon and use that, altering it slightly to suit your needs, I guess. But that's boring.

This, exactly. I'm picking 6 pokemon I like. I'm using smogon as a guide, but ultimately the sets are my own, based on my own attempts at battling. For instance, at first my team was using a metagross, but I realized that I lacked some vital coverage I needed, and ended up replacing him with a lucario.

I hover around 1300 on showdown. Not great, but my team does win battles sometimes.
