According to the anime, abusing pokemon is just as bad (if not worse) of a crime as animal abuse.
Also, yes, you have to tame animals, but a pokemon has no reason to hate you for taking it from the wild; in the wild, it has to fight for food and shelter against other, potentially stronger pokemon. And if it faints out there, it doesn't get whisked away to the Pokecenter, it'll probably die. And I don't think there's a berry that revives a pokemon, so if a pokemon faints in the wild, it's fucked.
