<expect when facing gym leader, you can't use more pokemon than him/her. you can use less pokemon than him/her or equal amount.
>no using items (held items are ok though)
>all pokemon have to be different type, so no sharing types

Do you mean that when I have a 6 poke team I can't catch anymore pokemon until something dies?
