i went for fennekin because fire on my first playthrough

later i picked chespin, and found that it's the best choice in-game. It has a wide movepool that lets it pretty much solo the game without much trouble (hawluchu is its only real threat), and it takes hits pretty well.

>poison jab
>seed bomb
>rock tomb
>low sweep

seriously, just use these moves as needed and you're good to go for all the gyms (except psychic)

The endgame is either Wifi, Battle Maison, or breeding, and all three of those require better pokemon than your generic shit ingame team. The Hidden Abilities for all three starters are better than their defaults.

Gen3 wasn't so bad, I really liked Treecko and all three final evos. My least favorite was probably Gen4 (hated all three babies, liked the final forms) or Gen5 (only really liked Snivy's line, Tepig was passable, Oshawott a shit)
