You just know you need to stop Cyrus from obtaining their powers. Boring. In Platinum they don't even bother to make Dialga and Palkia interesting, they just serve to awaken Giratina who shows you exactly what he's about in the Distortion World. Time and space? Shit doesn't work right when Giratina is involved. You navigate the Distortion World in unique ways, making it feel like what you're doing is important. Good storytelling.
The Tao trio are interesting on paper, but impossible to make interesting in practice. Idealism and truth are abstract enough that if they were illustrated well throughout the game, the kids would never get it, so they outright explain what they're about. Remember the first rule of storytelling: "Show, don't tell". The fact that N can get either the Truth or Ideals Pokemon depending on your game makes any characterization tied to the dragons meaningless. Is he an unworldly idealist or is he worldly and insightful? It doesn't matter, because his origins and behavior are the same regardless. Does it matter at all or are they just big monochrome dragons that are there to be cool? Yes? Then why give them an abstract concept at all? Kyurem being the being of emptiness works pretty well in BW2 since he's there to assimilate with Reshiram and Zekrom to become whole, but why stop halfway? Have him absorb both and become the god-like dragon that split into the Tao trio? Oh right because they need to sell two versions. At least he showed what his deal was without needing a boatload of explanation. Bad storytelling (BW) meh storytelling (BW2).
I'm not sure I share the common opinion, but I hope that answered your question.
