There isn't one. They all have haters and fans, and for something so complex, it's hard to imagine that any one gen is underrated. Was the competitive scene good? Was it popular? Were the new Pokemon good? Was the story anything special? Was the region interesting or memorable? What additions to the series norm did the gen introduce? New mechanics? Good music? None of these questions have clear cut answers that everyone can agree on.

Gen 1: Everyone knows and has played this, fans during the mega-fad era will tell you it's the only one worth playing.
Gen 2: Was just enough to be a good sequel, but didn't add enough to be considered a good generation if it was introduced today. People dislike it because it's too similar to gen 1 and doesn't feel like it has its own identity.
Gen 3: Shook the series up by tossing most old Pokemon out the window and cutting compatibility with old gens. New mechanics, an entirely new region, and a new coat of paint. People dislike it because it's different from what came before it.
Gen 4: Game Freak made competitve play a priority, and gave old mons new evolutions, made every Pokemon new again with the phys/spec split, and shook up the games' lifespan by introducing a wifi infrastructure to all of their main series games. I didn't play it when it was new so I won't say anything subjective.
Gen 5: Went the gen 3 route and introduced a region with gen 1 replacements and few to no old Pokemon in the main story. Made story more important by intercutting every new city with dialogue that you couldn't easily skip. Tried very hard to reinvigorate the series for a new audience. Quality is debatable. Made old mons new again with new hidden abilities which shook up the metagame.
Gen 6: Current gen, can't say much about it right now since it will evolve with new titles.

So yeah, not one gen is really underrated, as they all get their fair share of discussion.

I think you really over simplified what people didn't like about Gen 3. The problem with Gen 3 was Hoenn had such an atrocious layout and was way too HM dependant.
Thats my only complaint about R/S/E. If the map weren't so shitty Emerald would be a truly amazing game. Its just hard to reconcile the fact that it is absolute chore to navigate.

maybe it's the fact its the awkward middle child that came out while nostalgiafags when through their "too cool for pokemon" phase but before newfags got into it

damn shame cuz it had the best pokedex additions and music and was the first generation to really get the "legendary" thing right. the starters all did something new and were really balanced against each other, abilities were amazing, dive remains the greatest HM ever, hold items were expanded from a gimmick to a major factor, the battle frontier was probably the best it's ever been... i could go on, but gen 3 really doesn't get its due and it's a crying shame

It wasn't nearly as HM dependent as Sinnoh. They designed Sinnoh like a Legend of Zelda overworld. Get a new HM, go back to an old route, use the new HM and most of the accumulated HMs before it to get to the next area. There was no redeeming gameplay in this design choice. You could only carry a few mons that had decent moves because you needed HM slaves.

I would argue that Hoenn is well designed for the story and setting it was trying to push. You felt the presence of the land in and the ocean as early as Route 104. You start the game in a wooded area and travel past and then over the ocean multiple times until you get to the mountains and start feeling their presence with lava caves, a sooty route, Meteor falls, and the desert route. After that, you start exploring the ocean by surfing and diving. For a game about the balance of land and sea, the setting really works.

Anyway I'd say Gen II is pretty underrated. It seems like it's the one Gen that is more or less ignored by most players. Nobody seems to either hate it or love it. But it was a HUGE upgrade from Gen I since it balanced the types out with Dark and Steel and introduced Breeding.

Gen 2 introduced these features, but they didn't do much with them until later. Dark and Steel had a couple of Pokemon each, and they didn't impact how you played the game much since they were difficult to obtain and rarely fought. Breeding was hardly a necessary addition at the time since every Pokemon would end up with the same stats at level 100 and competitive battling was local only so it wasn't as prevalent.

(note: gen 2 is my most nostalgic generation, as it was enough to feel new while still putting emphasis on the old by having Kanto as a fully-explorable region. It felt huge, and there was no seemingly reason to go back to gen 1 for me. Good sequel.)

My main issue with Gen 2/HGSS is the lack of diversity in the Regional dex with Johto Pokemon and the poor level scaling between Morty and Pryce.

Other than that and the new things you said in your post, Gen 2 is rather lackluster.

Agreed. I picked up HG recently and I'm not enjoying it very much. Gen 2 works purely out of nostalgia for me, and the most nostalgic part (the music) is [OPINION] absolutely terrible. Like I said in my first post, if a new generation with gen 2's design choices was released today, it would be universally panned.

Gen 6 is nothing like gen 2. You don't go back to an old region, the level scaling is fine, the Pokemon selection is diverse. The new Pokemon situation is similar but different. Unlike in gen 2 where new Pokemon were added simply to flesh out the previous generation which would make up the majority of the Pokemon you encountered, you get lots of interesting new lines that you can feasibly build a party out of. There aren't gen 3 and 5 amounts of new mons, but the ones that are new aren't terrible.

These are my two main issues with D/P/Pt. Having to scroll through the touch controls in D/P especially. The game didn't seem that slow the first time I played through it, but on replays the whole thing just slogs along until you reach the last couple gyms.

X/Y has some serious flaws but it gets way too much shit for a gen that just started. Remember how bad 3 was till Emerald and 4 was till Platinum? I wish people would wait till Z (or X2/Y2) is released before they grade this gen as a whole.

Verbose game theory guy from earlier in the thread here. I also thought that most of gen 4's music was bad. Most tracks sound as compressed as gen 3's but without the strong unified sound that the brass/guitar/snare drum trifecta that made gen 3 sound so unique. There's still a lot of trumpet flying around in gen 4, and none of it is done better than gen 3. The soundtrack is all over the place with intruments that don't work particularly well together. The Galactic music suite is brilliant though.

HG/SS is a musical abortion though. It sounds like something an amateur remixer would come up with. They use the old songs as a base and go crazy with them, which has the potential to sound good, but they forget what makes the GSC OST so good: simplicity. Each track does its own thing, and there isn't unnecessary piano and guitar riffs shoved into every track. You know how at sports games the person singing the national anthem always gives this over the top performance where they drag out every note? That's HG/SS.

Like FUCK. The lore and legendaries are the reasons why I personally shit on Gen IV so much. It's like they hired some random jackoffs from Deviant Art to come up with the new Legendaries and they ended up just having a piss contest over who can come up with the most overpowered legendary.

The only real underrated gen is the 3D one. Barely any one loves Colosseum/XD.

I absolutely adore the Genius Sonority games. They really did something different by making every battle a double battle, and the bosses actually felt like they were designed to give you a challenge, at least in Colosseum. XD is a little foggy since I only played it through it once. The setting was interesting and the music was brilliant.

I kind of blame Gen III for starting the trend where legendaries are the gods of this and that, with Kyogre and Groudon. Before that legendaries where just powerful and mysterious pokemon with fairly benign myths attached to them.

He's right. Scrolling through the menus, especially your main backpack pocket, can be a nightmare if you have a lot of stuff. Same with TMs. And while the touchscreen controls are "faster," they're still terribly slow and wonkey to boot.

Dialga and Palkia were boring because they didn't illustrate what they were the personifications of. Space and time? How can they make those concepts work? Dialga/Palkia just shows up and you battle it. They at least made up for it with Giratina and the Distortion world, which I would argue is even better than gen 3's drought/deluge/kaiju fight. The laws of space and time don't work right in the Distortion World, which shows what Giratina is capable of.

I think what he means is that Gen III starting the whole "control" legends. I.e., a legend controlling a certain aspect of the world (in this case, the sea/land/sky/weather). In gen II, Ho-oh restores three pokemon to life, but isn't the "life controlling" pokemon. It's a mysterious being with some supernatural powers, but it is not the be all and end all of a certain realm.

Likewise, Mew isn't the creator of pokemon, but is said to have traces of all dna. Gen I and II legends are mysterious because they leave lots to the imagination. They still have secrets that we can only guess at, but at the same time they definitely do not come across as all powerful (it doesn't seem ludicrous for them to be caught in a poke ball). Celebi can travel through time, but it does not control it (looking at you, dialga)

This really bugs me as well. The abstractness hit its peak in gen 5 though with the Tao trio. The age old storytelling adage "Show, don't tell" was completely ignored in B/W. They had to explain Reshiram and Zekrom, otherwise the player would have never gotten the theme. The trio is based on the concepts of idealism, truth, and emptiness, and the only one to be shown taking action based on its concept is Kyurem in BW2.

i should've went over once to edit this but I feel my point is made. Gen VI was terrible for interrupting the gameplay with superfluous character dialogue.
