the Dpad block is counter productive, eggs hatch fast most of the time a single turn around the tower will have a hatching, meaning you need to take your console to validate menus and naming anyway.
The trick is only interesting to level pokes in the daycare while you sleep.

The Kid Icarus 3DS stand has been immensely useful for me when I play Pokemon. Sometimes when I'm watching a show I just keep the 3DS on the stand with my left hand holding down the left/right button. The stand keeps it high enough so I don't have to look down everytime I want to check if the egg's hatched.

I did that before I was ever aware of how effective putting a guitar pick or card under the circle pad was. (To be honest, I was scared of it popping off like in the OP) I've only done that once but when I did I only tightened it down to the point that the Dpad was held down, I didn't tighten it until I couldn't tighten it anymore. The system is fine, there are no signs of the clamp on the 3ds. I take good care of my systems, don't worry.
