I think the steel nerf was a bigger factor. When you wanted a bird to wall shit why not just use Skarmory? But now Skarmory can't wall ghost or dark attackers very well.

Mandibuzz also counters Aegislash almost perfectly, there's nothing Aegislash can do to it unless it's doing some weird Choice Band Head Smash set.

Also, typically ghost and psychic types have piss-poor defense and couldn't take a +1 Shadow Claw from Braviary

Bulk up seems to work fine for Gallade, who's on par with Braviary

I'm not going to argue for thrash, I've never liked moves that lock you in
