Hey, /vp/! My boyfriend and I are both big Pokemon fans, and I'm a drawfag, so I decided it'd be a good idea to draw him with his dream Pokemon team for Valentine's day. It's a work in progress, but it'll be done tonight. I wanted your opinions on it so far, to fix any mistakes before I go any further. Thank you!

Meggs 1048 9958 1862 (Emolga, Helioptile, Luxio) Thu 13 Feb 2014 23:21:35 No. 18016192 Report I love it. I really like your style. Your lines are really clean, but they don't look pen tool'd and that's awesome and the reason I hate you. (I don't really hate you.) Ninetales is gonna look bitchin'. I don't see anything wrong with it so far. What's the background gonna be?

I'm not too sure what I'll do for the background, I might make it a generic grassy hill unless I can think of something better.

it's pretty shit tbh Your Jolteon looks like an insect and your Ninetales looks like it hasn't eaten in months.

I must say, your boyfriend doesn't have very diverse taste.

>>18016405 You can. It just means you probably don't have a very open mind. There are nearly 600 non-Gen I Pokemon. It's unlikely that not a single one of those is in a person's top 6, unless they're demonstrating some preference for Gen I just on the basis of it being Gen I. Like I said, possible, but boring and not very open-minded.

The cannons on Blastoise aren't supposed to be facing forward. They jut out to the sides a little. Also, Blastoise's anatomy is kind of off. Its limbs are placed too far down and should be pushed up a little because they look like they don't even quite belong to the body. Also, that guy's leg is bent very awkwardly and looks odd. Try to not make it a right-angle bend. Keep it fluid, like your style and go look at your own leg in that position for reference.

It's definitely drawn cleanly, but- I didn't know that was supposed to be a Ninetales over in the corner. Eh.

It's... well it's not terrible (the autism thread has desensitized me to pokemon fanart though). But that Ninetails is freaking me the fuck out.

Ninetale's head tuft is WAY too far back. It should begin right after the forehead, not the back of the head. Pic related.

>>18016600 >Viewing a Pokemon in terms of what gen it comes from rather than its own merits sounds more close-minded to me. ...that's precisely what I'm saying. When a person's six favorite Pokemon are all from the same generation, that's strong evidence that they're evaluating them on something other than their merits. If Scyther were in Gen II and Pidgeot in Gen IV and our hypothetical person still chose them, then yes, that in fact would be more open-minded, because it shows that they chose them on the merits, rather than their generation.
I'm glad we apparently agree.

Doesn't mean master anatomy of everything, but you should be able to ref to a pic of let's say a dog, understand the anatomy and be able to create a composition in a completely different pose.
Style comes after you know what you're doing because style is a manipulation of what you see and the way you interpret it. And if you can't even understand it, then you can't interpret it.

Okay, so I'm resketching Blastoise and Ninetales (which I was planning to anyways, hence them not being lined). I know it's very last minute, and I feel bad, but this is the first day I've had free in over a week. Thank you for your critiques, nonetheless. I'm going to have Ninetales facing the right, Blastoise facing forward, and him standing, and I'm going to move all of them closer together (to avoid big empty spaces being left after Blastoise is head-on.)

I know you were tempted to start coloring but you should have just finished your line work before moving on. I say this because your drawing is heavily reliant on its lines. From my understanding you're viewing each pokemon as individual parts and focusing on one pokemon at a time. While thats not necessarily a bad thing, if you want that extra 'umpf' and 'pizazz' to distinguish this from other drawings you need to view it as a whole. Get into the mindset that the line work is one piece and when that is absolutely perfect, then move onto the color. You've rushed onto flat colors without taking notice of the inconsistent line work. I'm not insulting you, I'm pointing out a glaring flaw, and if you want to improve then you need to pay attention to the details. In the picture I've cleaned up the lines and placed a comparison of the original next to it. This is the kind of polish that needs to be present thorough the piece. Each pokemon are wonderfully drawn, though you may need to revise some areas around Jolteon's design. There are many tangents and he begins to lose his form. Big example is where his chin and paw meet. I don't know how you plan on coloring this but I suggest you taper off areas of the pokemon further away from us in order to create a sense of depth. It could be as simple as brushing over layers of white once it's completed in order to make your Pokemon 'pop' out more. Also I suggest a simple background. Good job, I'm sure your bf would enjoy it.
