The cannons on Blastoise aren't supposed to be facing forward. They jut out to the sides a little. Also, Blastoise's anatomy is kind of off. Its limbs are placed too far down and should be pushed up a little because they look like they don't even quite belong to the body.

When a person's six favorite Pokemon are all from the same generation, that's strong evidence that they're evaluating them on something other than their merits. If Scyther were in Gen II and Pidgeot in Gen IV and our hypothetical person still chose them, then yes, that in fact would be more open-minded, because it shows that they chose them on the merits, rather than their generation.

Doesn't mean master anatomy of everything, but you should be able to ref to a pic of let's say a dog, understand the anatomy and be able to create a composition in a completely different pose.
Style comes after you know what you're doing because style is a manipulation of what you see and the way you interpret it. And if you can't even understand it, then you can't interpret it.
