I mean i thought it supposed to represent cool-eye looking statues from that island - picrelated.
I mean - the eye, the nose + pointy chin or beard that makes it look like a Pharaon head or something.
I saw it when first season was on the show back in late 90th.
In fact...i actually was kinda disappointed and CAN NOT UNSEE when people explained that it's not supposed to be a nose.

Yellow version is probably what ruined metapod for me (at least for a while).

The original anime showed metapod correctly, IIRC.
