Nuh-uh, Rotom and Shuppet are the same pokemon, and they both evolve into Castform (depending on if they're male or female).

Baltoy evolves into Uxie because they both have their eyes closed and levitate,

The one time the series has ever remotely touched the subject of what Genesect was originally like, it shat on the Kabutops hypothesis with this fossil.

In all honesty, I wouldn't be surprised if what Genesect once was hasn't really been thought about. Game Freak designed a Bug type cyborg transformer, THEN picked the "modified ancient predator" as its backstory. Being an alien like Deoxys, a product made from scratch like Porygon, or a modified Scizor were all also probably considered too but discarded.

I always assumed this was Gamefreak's "We are sort of rehashing the series, this is what Kabutops would've looked like in a different region" thing like they did with all those other similar looking Pokemon.

But that's dumb, too. It's not like Alomomola is a subspecies of Luvdisc. They're two entirely separate species with similar morphology. It doesn't actually make them related.

Well if we are just using the catch all for bug and not the specific technical term, any arthropod can be considered a bug.
Lobsters, spiders, horse shoe crabs, all are commonly considered bugs

I'll summarize why this is NOT possible.

>Midriff/torso section is completely different.
>Head shape is different. Kabutops's head is flat and angular, Genesect's head has more in common with a smooth rock.
>Lack of tail. There's no reason why getting rid of its tail would improve anything.
>Different types. Horseshoe Crabs are not bugs.(1)
>"This ancient bug Pokémon was altered by Team Plasma. They upgraded the cannon on its back."(2) This implies the original pokemon had a cannon on its back, as no pokedex entry implies the cannon was installed by Team Plasma. Kabutops does not have a cannon.

If anything, Kabutops may have competed with Genesect back when both existed, but when you consider Rock is super effective against Bug, Genesect may have been the hunted one.

When you introduce the concept of change, you introduce the possibility that Genesect could have been any other ancient pokemon. In that sense, it might've been an Aerodactyl before.

Plasma merely upgraded Genesect.
