Why does defog seem to be so much more popular now than it was in gen 5? Doesn't it work in the same way?

Latios, Latias, Mandibuzz, Skarmory and Zapdos are very good options.

In gen 5 it only god rid of the hazards you set up on the opponent's side which was detrimental and stupid. Now it gets rid of them on both sides.

Defog now removes hazards rather than just lowering evasion. It removes hazards on both sides, though- so if you yourself use hazards, it's a little worse than Rapid Spin.

But due to it being an HM in D/P/P, it can be learned by a large number of Pokèmon, making it incredibly prevalent and useful.

They both have their merits.
Magic Bounce usually forces a switch (especially if you're blocking smeargle) so sweepers can setup, or defensive types like espeon can calm mind+baton pass.
