I still think that if forced to pick between those two, the HM obstacles are much better, because they just seem less lazy. They fit in the world better, which is very important to me.
However, you're probably right in saying any obstacle is lazy, and I'll give you that. Would a natural barrier be better - too powerful wild Pokemon, maybe?
