I think that for a start she just wanted to get away from the shitty routine she had.
Remember the first episode? She disliked what she did but had no purpose in leaving her house since she was always so fearful (as shown by her being afraid of being out by the night, afraid of camping, etc).

When she saw Ash on the TV she remembered what was probably one of the few times she felt good while being out there in the wild. She remembered that boy, and how safe she felt with him, what he could teach her and what she could achieve while being with him. All those feelings might or might not mean she's in love with him.

Whether she loves Ash or not, or whether they'll ever have anything doesn't really matter since Serena has already left her routine and beat several of her fears. Now she needs to find something that she can aim for and hopefully achieve it, and I have no doubt that will happen later in this series, maybe sooner that we expect.

She's after the D but I can see her realizing that it's just not enough to stay the way she is especially with her seeing how Ash lives his life.

If I had to say what her goal will be, it'd be "Aim to become Ash's equal." (brave and relentless in chasing his goal). She's pretty cowardly and directionless right now after all. It also fits with her initial goal of chasing after him. Aim to become his equal so you can stand at the same place as him (both in a romantic and non-romantic sense).

It would also be a good way to leave everything hanging so they don't have to resolve jack shit. Remember the girl who loves Ash? Yeah, she's still trying to be a pokemon master just like him. She'll confess when she achieves her goal like Ash which is never.

She's easily the blandest character because they're not even focusing on her. At least with the others we got to see them do stuff and be part of the plot even before their goals were established. Serena just tags along and reacts.

I think what remains to be seen is how long her little crush on Ash will stick around. Episode 13 showed that it was still there, and she was relieved when Ash didn't have to actually go out with Premier.

He still pretty much retains everything she likes about him, and when it comes to him and food she pretty much just sighs, rolls her eyes and then smiles/lauhgs about it.

I guess as she becomes more focused on her goal, it might fade.

There's nothing different about him. He hasn't changed since she met him, and probably will never change at all. He's still the kid that loves Pokemon to death, is brave, and caring to everyone.

The only thing she didn't know about him was his rather large appetite. And she got on him a little (or at least pointed it out) about it in the recent episode when she implied that he and Pikachu were gluttons. Then saying "Mooou.." at the end of the episode when is stomach growled but then laughed about it.

Sort of? What you're referring to was the one at the end of the 7th episode (and throughout the episode really), when she was trying to get some reaction towards her out of him only for it to completely go over his head because he was admiring himself in the Rhyhorn outfit, or stuffing her cookies in his mouth.

But, I dunno the Premier episode shows that she was worried that Ash might favor another girl over her with her misunderstanding. Honestly she just seems really reserved with her feelings towards Ash, only showing them in certain situations that call for it.

Well, w/e the case and given it's not likely to go anywhere at all...it kinda makes all this advertisement in the different magazines about Serena "liking/having special feelings towards/being very interested in" Ash...feel pretty pointless?

Though, I guess it's being used as a hook to bring girls in. After all that Valentine's poster of Ash, and Serena was in a girls magazine (and I don't recall them ever advertising "romance" in Pokemon before).

Misty was literally nothing but a thorn in Ash's side, constantly berating him and insulting him. I mean, sheesh, I know Pikachu destroyed her bike in the process of getting rid of Team Rocket. But she literally did nothing but whine and bitch at Ash for various reasons. And she's the only female companion in my memories that Ash actually tried to ditch at more than one point. Sure she calmed down once Togepi came into the picture, but then she just became bland.

The whole point was that Brock and Misty were there to keep Ash's feet on the ground, though Brock was more likely to let trivial things go than Misty.

Dawn, I think, is the bet one as far as writing goes, since she didn't need a character to balance out her lack of personality (Like Max was for May), had a premiere episode all to herself, and had her own story and goals aside from Ash's which she had from the beginning.

It's really too soon to say what they're gonna do with this whole Ash/Serena angle they're pushing. It's only been 16 episode, in what's likely to be a 150+ episode series.

Fucking this. We get she won't win da Ash in the long run. But I'm hoping the writers will at least leave things on a positive note, like a kiss on the cheek, or more realistically, a final scene reminiscent to the first time they met.
