There were two strategies for this.
The first, and objectively the best (for multiple reasons) was to wait until we got a free lapras later in the game.
The second was to get an eevee, then evolve it with a waterstone (statistically very unlikely to pull off).
People went with the second, but the plan failed when they got a firestone instead of a waterstone (gee who would've thought it's hard to buy a specific item with 50k players), so they needed to place a pokemon into storage so that they still had room for lapras.
The pc is hard to navigate.
