Men went out and worked, hunted, fought and built, usually for the sake of protecting woman. In exchange, woman bore a man's children and maintained all of the smaller tasks that the man can't do, of which the definition of such tasks can vary. In cases a woman could do a man's job if he was unable to do it for whatever reason.
The only reason all this feminist, transgender bullshit and so on was allowed to spawn was because technology has advanced to the point where where we are no longer as hard pressed to keep those roles.
If our modern technology was taken away and we were forced back into being hunter-gatherers, we would go straight back to our roots, and that includes the gender roles you so supposedly despise. Why? Because as a species that's how we are supposed to function. You didn't just think gender roles existed for no reason, did you? Technology is an artificial factor that gives people the opportunity to challenge what was intended to be.
And no this isn't an appeal to nature, it's just an explanation as to why gender roles have existed for this long.
