Ok, but gen 1 is the first generation. If anything, it shouldve been the gen with the most monotypes to set the foundation for future gens.

I never really truly learned the difference between rock and ground types until later gens, etc etc

I think the point is that if you're designing the first generation - and thus have total freedom to change the type chart at your will - and you're not going to introduce monotype pokémon of a particular type, why would you create that type in the first place? In generation one, almost every grass type was also partially poison type. If that's gonna be the case, why simply not create a new type that joins grass and poison in one? You wouldn't even need to erase the poison type for that (which is nice as the zubat line is also poison but not grass).

It's funny how when gen V came out people were complaning about how the design quality was shit and how game freak shouldn't make too many pokémon if they can't keep the quality of the designs at acceptable levels.

now that gen 6 came out and we have "only" 72 pokémon (with mostly great designs) people are complaining about how game freak should keep doing a lot of pokémon regardless of their design quality

There was definitely no reason for both Rock and Ground types. Should just be one type with certain moves (EQ, Fissure, etc.) not hitting Flying types.

Because poison and plant are two completely different things and making them the same type makes no sense from an intuitive stand point.

Even though there was only 72, there were also a bunch of mega evolutions.

The problem of Gen 6 for me was that it felt that Gen 1 pokemon was all-in-your-face and the new pokemon seemed rare to encounter.

I agree for the most part, there's no design I just outright hate this gen, I haven't had felt that since Johto.
On the other hand I occasionally like the weird/"ugly" designs they come up with, Drapion was one I liked. The designs this gen felt very..."safe".

Yeah, nah, that's bullshit. Gen 1/5/3 had tons of Pokemon I liked and they introduced the most. Making less doesn't magically make the designs better and gen 6 has its fair share of shit from a competitive stand point as well.

You know, at first Gamefreak thought gen 2 would be the end. They did not give two flying fucks about any "foundations" you speak of, and in the end it didn't really matter.
