Ok image updated, Just lost my Mandibuzz to a Critical Stone Edge from an Ace Trainers Darmanitan, and replaced her with Captain the Braviary.

Just gotta grind team up to 73 and catch Captain up to the rest and will be heading into Victory Road.

Gen three was my first Nuzlocke, and it seemed like a good start.
It needs to be challenging to be engaging. For me at least. I need to feel like my pokemon could be taken at any moment.
Nuzlocking gen 5 was a bit boring in that sense.
Platinum nuzlockes are pretty difficult. You could go balls deep and start there if you wanted.

Platinum nuzlocke is about to go to the eighth gym, and I allowed trades with self for evolution. Abomasnow, Magmortar, Magnezone, Dusknoir, Gyarados, Pelipper. I'm essentially fucked, I'm way too slow.

Black 2 is better. Also about to fight eighth gym. Jellicent, Swanna, Scolipede, Serperior, Chandelure, Klinklang. This one is much easier due to Audino and the fact Klinklang is a fucking boss.

X is now a mono-poison using Weedle starter. Currently Beedrill, Gloom, Golbat, Croagunk before 2nd gym (route 8). Forgot about the glittering cave segment, so I'll be over leveled. Going to grab a stunky and a tentacool ASAP

It always ends up with me 6 badges in, with 2-3 GREAT pokemon, and every pokemon I catch after that dying after I grind it to semi-useful for 2hours

I only saw through my Sapphire run because I cheated and used the emulator's FF feature to make grind bearable, which made my pokemon strong enough that Elite Four wasn't a challenge

And despite cutting a few corners, I still ended up losing to the Pokemon Champ in my Y run

I started an Emerald Nuzlocke a few days ago. It's pretty nice - The difficulty isn't so bad, and it's interesting at the very least. I've only beaten one Nuzlocke before, and it was all luck.

So far I lost a Zubat, Poochyena, Numel, Azumarril, Linoone, Tropius, Vulpix and a Spheal. Grinding to fight Tate & Liza right now.

My current team is Swampert, Gyarados, Banette, Solrock (actually pretty underrated), Vileplume and Donphan (who desperately needs levels).

I'm having a lot of fun.

Starting my first new game in a long time after finally picking up B&W2 (because I can't afford a 3ds).

This run is already looking to be interesting because I basically got gobsmacked. I used Growl to counter Cheren's Work Ups, and it looked like I was going to walk away clean... only for him to go three for three on crit tackles, OHKOing every time. I honestly don't think I've ever had such a terrible thing happen to me in all my years of Pokemon.

My Patrat Harry managed to outspeed him and I kept in the game, but I had to keep going with nothing but a derp. And not to be ungrateful to to bro who saved me from oblivion, but lets be honest, Patrat is the worst Derp in history if only on moveset.

Thankfully the Pokegods saw fit to throw me a bone: my next capture was Growlithe, and I followed that up with a Pidove (I captured one in the outer area and inner area of the Construction site, I count outdoor areas by loading screen and indoor areas by label for capture purposes). Beat the 2nd Gym with no problems and moved on the mainland. I was unlucky enough to get a Minccino out in the desert but lucky enough for it to be a Technician. Fate is being a strange roller coaster on this run. At this rate I'll probably get an Eevee in the Park and a Trapinch in the resort and then get like derps in a row.

I'm thinking of a challenge where I only use pokemon the same type as the gym I'm challenging. So only use bugmons at the Bug gym, rockmons at Rock gym, etc.

Anyone else try something like this?

I can sort of agree to that. I got exploded by a wild claydol (thankfully I had a Golem out) but still, ridiculously annoying.
I'll probably sack the Sneasel I saved though. I feel bad about it.

Sup Challenge General

I'm about to start a Nuzlocke on Emerald, and I'm looking for suggestions to ramp up the difficulty a bit. I'm playing on cart, which rules out a few options, but at the moment I'm thinking of this for my rules, but I'm always open to suggestions

- First Pokemon of Each Route only
- Fainting is Death
- Battle Style is Set
- No Items in Battle
- Can only use the Pokemon Center in a town twice. When I first arrive, and once I defeat the Gym Leader.

I`d add non-duplicate rules, you cant capture a pokemon you already have/had/same evo line, you just ignore duplicate mons and get the first non-duplicate. Makes team more diverse and not 6 tentacools/zubats

So I decided I wanted nostalgia and bought X. I haven't played pokemon since gen 3. I have started playing a nuzlocke challenge following the basic rules + no repeats + no exp share. So far it doesn't seem hard enough though. I guess The next thing is to stop using items in battle?

With X and Y, one thing that I heard about which I thought sounded really cool was to leave the Exp Share on, and rotate your party with every catch. New catch goes straight into the party, oldest member gets boxed. Can't unbox someone until a death, and even then you need to take the one that's been in there longest.

Probably wouldn't work if you've been playing for a while, though

Rolling to decide which original starter I get
0-3 = squirtle
4-6 = bulbasaur
7-10 = charmander

I started with the water type and my party is currently 3xNormal, bug, water, fairy so either of the first ones would be nice

I always end up over leveling in DPP for whatever reason around the third gym..
I think I was just scared after losing my Monferno -and- Staravia to some Selfdestruct shenanigans...Didn't white out so the game was still up. Only had Seymore the Budew left.
And the fucker wouldn't evolve. So I had to start anew with a Geodude I just caught in Wayward cave.
Team is Crobat/Graveler/soon to be Umbreon. The second it turns dark, I'm evolving it.

This is a Platinum Nuzlocke, by the way.

So it turns out that this style of Nuzlocke just encourages me to grind harder, but its the most high stakes, unforgiving grinding I've yet experienced. All my pokemon are perpetually in the low yellows, and I haven't even faced my first trainer yet. Ignatius is pulling way more weight than he should be expected to, as he was the only one who got a chance to power grind on Route 101 (the Zigzagoon eats the catch there, no point in going to Oldale before I've gotten the most exp possible). Houston and Marielle hit too lightly and take hits too hard to stand toe to toe to wild Pokemon right now, so they're getting babysat until they start to pull ahead of the curve.

I've bought 7 Potions and 5 Additional Pokeballs, along with 2 Antidotes. I'm now completely out of money, so until I start winning fights I'm not going to be able to buy any more healing items. I'm not going back to Oldale town regardless.

Three Potions gets my team up to a reasonable level of health, time to take on the world.

There's some pretty radical new Grass types in X/Y, but Normal has a really diverse spread of new Pokemon who can offer you a lot of coverage. Helioptile, Furfrou, Pyroar and Diggersby will all put in a ton of work.

Flying seems kind of underwhelming to me, despite Hawlucha being a total bro.

I wasn't too far in, but still a decent chunk of time invested. I'm either going to try and recreate the conditions as much as possible as quickly as possible (suspending the Nuzlocke until I can get up to the same point) or start all over again.

I'm inclined to recreate conditions. I'd already started to get fond of Ignatius, Marielle and Houston, and while it won't be the same... it just feels right.

Almost every Pokemon you can get before the first gym is super trash, the experience you can get is terrible so you have to spend like 4 hours constantly grinding if you don't want to go into Cheren with a level disadvantage, Cheren is a bullshit fight himself, it's a fucking nightmare.

It took me three tries to make it through his gym without any losses, and then I get TPK'd because there's a bitch right after him with a ROLLOUT DUNSPARCE. Jesus fucking christ, how cheap can one game be? And I thought Platinum was bad.

Just about to take on Roxanne (yep, taken me this long to get this far).

Missed my Route 116 catch by accidental Critical, intentionally killed the Cascoon that popped up in the Petalburg Woods. Grinding already takes forever, I didn't want a pokemon that had nothing to contribute for five whole levels.

Other than that, feeling pretty good. Wish me luck.

On my second playthrough of the games (usually on the third versions and/or remakes) I would do a grass monotype run

The first time I did it was on Platinum and it was surprisingly doable.

My final team was:

Torterra
Roserade
Ludicolo
Leafeon
Tropius
Abomasnow

Standby: Tangrowth, Cherrim, Wormadam, Carnivine

I mostly ran into difficulty where you would expect: Candice, Aaron and Flint.

Cynthia was surprisingly easy compared to Aaron and Flint for obvious reasons. Roserade, Torterra and Ludicolo ended up being my primary hitters with the others being swapped in and out when I needed them. Abomasnow was... risky - he dealt with grass, fliers, dragons and the like but yeah, once he was in I avoided switching him out if I could help it.

Welp, I guess Roxanne is easy when her Geodude lets a Marill get up to +6 Defence unmolested. Seriously, we both spent the first six turns using Defence Curl.

Actually killing Nosepass took some doing. I ran out of PP for Water Gun, and had to Tail Whip it down to -4ish so that I could use Tackle to finish it off.

Simisage

Sawsbuck

Standby: Lilligant, Amoonguss, Maractus

Burgh was a pain in the ass - easily my hardest gym. The rest of the game was definitely more difficult than Platinum but the Elite 4 were a lot easier. Reshiram, N and Ghetsis were all pretty difficult to deal with though. Sawsbuck and Simisage would end up being my heaviest damage dealers and Whimsicott and Ferrothorn helped ensure my survival with paralysis and walling shit while I force fed my dying plants milk and lemonades.

I considered grabbing Virizion, but it was way too similar to Sawsbuck who was already getting overleveled by the point that I could catch Virizion.

what's the 'correct' way to do a nuzlocke run in your eyes? The way that makes it more difficult? Where do you draw the line between someone who is making it a fair challenge, and a 'cheat' doing it the easy way? Somebody only using their starter? Somebody using two Pokemon? Somebody using three? Where?

I understand your premise, but I think it misses the point. The only person you're challenging her is yourself, however harsh or lenient that means you'll be. If you are going to run through the game with just your Starter pokemon, you are probably going to win. The same in a non-nuzlocke run, because if you just overlevel your Starter its probably going to crush any opposition.

But why do it? That's not challenging. You're not going to feel like you accomplished anything if you start out with the mindset "If I overlevel my starter, I'll beat everything" and then do just that.

Since you ask, I think that the 'correct" way of Nuzlocking just means sticking to the spirit of the challenge. What are the rules? Catch the first Pokemon of every route, and only that Pokemon. Don't use Pokemon that have fainted.

So use the Pokemon you catch. Take these weak little shitmons and turn them into something great. And if they fall, remember them. Take up the next shitmon in your box, or on the next route, and turn them into legends (at least in your own mind). "Winning" the Nuzlocke was never the point. Journey, Important, Destination, etc, etc, I'm sure you've heard it all before.

There is nothing wrong with playing the way you want to play. We're adding all these self-imposed restrictions on ourselves because we want to, not because some high Nuzlocke authority will come down and smite us if we don't.

If you just want to catch a Pidgey and power through with those two pokemon, then that is okay. I personally don't see the appeal of that, because it doesn't seem that challenging or particularly fun. I really enjoy catching a full team or more, trying my hardest to keep them all alive as I struggle through the game.

What I'm trying to say is... this isn't some big, ironclad thing. You should play in whatever way is most fun for you.

About to start a silver run

Rules:
- Only catch first pokemon found on route, if it dies tough luck.
- If first encounter is same species as already caught, tough luck.
- Release on fainting.
- No buying items apart from pokeballs.
- No using items apart from bicycle / pokeballs.
- Made an RNG in python to choose my starter.

I'm very pleased I chose to do nuzlocke on my first playthough on gen 6, even though it's my second nuzlocke ever. I'm happy with the little difficulty boost basic rules of the challenge give, and that playing this way kinda forces me to get creative with pokemons I've given chance to meet. I'm constantly surprised by, and even found "pokebros" from pokemon species I never thought I would train.

Also if you didn't notice, its a Self-Imposed Challenge, which means you answer to yourself, if you think you need more rules to make it challenging, add more rules and if you think the rules are too tough well go for less then..

I agree with a lot of what Vareki said earlier and I'm just trying to reinforce that, but ultimately, it's you who decides how you play, and if challenge runs don't sound fun well I can't do much about that.

Kinda tempted to run a Trick Room team but then I'm sacrificing my Screen support + another team member having to run it, and possibly losing the run.

Oh right. I completely forgot about my Warlocke. Soul Silver feels so long it kinda kills your interest in playing through it all again. Believe I was grinding in order to face Blue or something.

I really should complete it for the sake of the fallen.

Private Rattata died to a random trainer crit.
Officer Slowpoke died to a Clefable Metronome that turned into Mega Horn.
Veteran Graveler was taken out by one of Clair's Dranonairs in order to protect another member and Major Heracross got killed while weakening her Kingdra enough for the other to take it out.
Commander Meganium died to a Kimono Girl's Vaporeon which I forgot had Ice Beam.
Admiral Kingler bravely took on Karen's Houndoom, but a critical Dark Pulse found its way through his armor.

Even though I may have forgotten about the game, the heroes will never be forgotten.

Umbreon was frozen 3-4 times, I had to spam Lava Cookies and Hyper Potions. Until she got crit.

Solo runs are too easy imo. Just over level that one mon so much that it wrecks the E4 and champion. I'm going to do a wonderlocke with a level cap, which I personally think is a lot more challenging and fun.

Haha I fucking won! Would have been a tough battle if Cray didn't manage to OHKO 3/6 of her mons, fucking Analytic + DD boosted Dragons + Ice Punch is a hilarious combo, Captain OHKO Hydreigon after surviving a Draco Meteor which surprised me but that nature definitely helped.

Lost Beyblade to a Critical Outrage from Haxorus and Venus to a Critical Outrage from Dragonite though, so it wasn't a clean sweep but I'm more than happy to have finally beat BB2 Challenge.

Debating whether to continue the run and go for the double up on the Elite 4 and finish the game completely or just start up a Sacred Gold run, but feel I need to keep going.

Oh its not stock BW2 its a hack version with all mons and whatnot, better abilites and movesets for 75% of the dex. Fucking difficult though, Haxorus ended up being the highest level mon I fought at Lvl 79.

Grave news from the War Themed Soul Silver Nuzlocke. Warlocke 2: Johto Conquest.

After the long training we were finally prepared to face our biggest challenge as of yet. Our old nemesis General Blue, as he likes to call himself now. With every other General defeated and their armies disposed of he was the only one left to oppose us.

I knew that the troops were a little on the edge, since it had been a while since they were in an actual skirmish. And the enemies we were about to face were quite intimidating.

It started off surpisingly well, with Lieutenant Ampharos and Marshal Quagsire taking out the Exeggutor and Rhydon in a surprise attack. But then the No Guard Machamp came out. It almost ended Marshal with those Dynamic Punches, but with some tandem between Marshal and Sergeant Crobat we were able to take it out. But then tragedy struck...

Since Marshal Quagsire was on the brink of death after those Dynamic Punches Sergeant had to take on the Arcanine alone. A Flare Blitz brought both of them down low but Arcanine managed to get the better of Sergeant with Extreme Speed. Corporal Ambipom quickly avenged him and Lieutenant Ampharos could sweep the remaining forces.

Though it was a big victory, the loss of Sergeant weighs heavy on us. He's been with us through the hell this war has been and been invaluable to the troop. It's unfair to see him fall at the end like this... Then again, war is never fair.

With all enemy forces vanquished and peace brought back to both regions there is one challenge left for me to face... Myself.

My old friend Major Snorlax decided to come along. With the loss of Sergeant Crobat we had room in the squad and Major has proven his worth more times than needed. I'm not sure if I'm glad to see him back, or sad that he couldn't enjoy his retirement.

Also what rule set do you think I should tack on besides the standard shit? I was thinking of some healing limit or no items in battle shit. Kill all legendary Pokemon in main story? Not sure though. Hit me up with some suggestions.

I beat the team Flare grunts with ease, easily dealt with Korrina, and caught Roberto. Get it? Cause he wears a robe? ah forget it...

I was worried from the well known and feared Brains&Brawn couple, but we managed to beat them with no loses!
But the way back to the Pokécenter wasn't as easy...

I'm sorry, anon who liked Amelia, this hurts me more than ones and zeros should. She was the first Pokémon I got to 2, and then 3, stars in amie, not just in this run, but in general, since only now i started using it, because I actually got attached to these pretend creatures...

Both her and Kittan were the backbone of the team, but in moral and in actual battles, so the road from here will be tough. I think I'll take out Michael and Ace from the PC as our new memebers, though I can't do it now, just looking at the screen makes me feel guilty...

Also, before you call me out, the Sawk didn't have full HP, it got hurt by Kittan's rocky helmet, it didn't survive from sturdy

Journey goes on - lost my Hippopotas to that girl with the blasted Solrock in Grant's Gym, cut it extremely close with Grant's own Amaura - really should have sent out Lunatone to Rock Slide him at least once despite Lunatone's lacking attack, but Quilladin soldiered a Refrigerate Take Down with 9 HP to spare. Spritzee made quick work of Tyrunt.

Been much more careful after that. Korrina didn't pose much of a problem. Currently swapped out Vivillon and Tyrunt for a Chatot and Remoraid I caught. Desperately need a Water type, and I may well bring Vivillon back for Ramos, but it's always good to have another flyer. One that Jumpluff's Acrobatics can't super-effective, no less.

There are some...curious ones.

One of the more interesting ones I've seen is the amusing titled 'Christian Challenge'. In it, you cannot let your Pokemon evolve, you cannot use Ghost, Dark or Poison-types or any moves that have those types, you cannot catch any of the regional snakes or use Serperior, you cannot use items like PP Ups, HP Ups or Rare Candies and cannot spend money on in-game activities requiring you to do so, you cannot use fossil 'Mons, and if you get an egg, you have to train the hatched 'Mon to Level 18 before boxing it or releasing it.. And on that note, Pokemon have to be level 22 before they can breed.

I did find this which I've seen posted on /vp/ countless times but never bothered with it. I don't even understand what half of this shit means and most don't seem like they can work with gen 1, which is what I feel like doing right now.

I let his scyther swords dance two times, and lost Vaporeon to his damned wing attack. Nearly lost Wartortle and Bibarel too, but the latter knocked out Scyther and won the battle.

Shit, hate myself. Vaporeon tanked everything for me, just not that crit... RIP brave soldier. ;_;
