Some types just don't have access to such a check or counter without bringing in a special pokemon that won't do anything to help their team against anything else.
It certainly doesn't hurt steel or fighting in terms of teambuilding either.

Some things are so strong that they overwhelm nearly every other Pokemon. This is a gym metagame. The leaders have to use monotype teams. The tourney is a monotype tourney. Most types have little that can stand in the way of a NP MLucario, and then the guy has 2 other pokemon in battle with it, as well.
Bans like this keep the game vibrant and healthy.

You cant always carry a hard counter to those pokemon either, it isnt practical and somewhat centralises a team. The beauty of monotype is that there is so much variety!!

WP dragonite is always fun
I'd say the most important things in building a monotype team is your number of resistances and coverage moves, as well as a different role for each pokemon. If all of your team is "strong attacker" then it's very easy for an opponent to take advantage of that. Like my greninja soloed tuna's team twice with ice beam since he had nothing to counter it. MCharX might be useful for that -- it's a fairy and ice neutral physical attacker that can't be burned. That could be extremely useful for you!
like with my dark team I had:
- scarfdreigon - special attacking nuke, FWGE resist, ground immune, fire coverage (I wish I used this guy more in the tourney)
- ttar - special wall and strong physical attacker, fire resist
- mandibuzz - physical wall, ground immunity, bug/fighting neutral, flying coverage, booster remover/eliminator (whirlwind/foul play)
- bisharp - priority attacker, booster, fairy neutrality, steel for fairies (ended up not working as well as I hoped it did to that extent)
- greninja - fast, loads of needed coverage and sash user
- sableye - utility, staller, burner, normal/fighting immunity

Toxic/Moonblast are options for your set though. Depends on what you want because they're both walled by the same things.

It's true, just about the only use he has is still his auto-hail niche. However I think his mega buff being one of the most notable directs the shift of hail stalling with him, to outright using his own generated hail to mow through things before switching out.
Subject to the numerous weaknesses he has though
Now I'm pondering whether my all time favourite Walrein has a place still, or if Avalugg and his spin potential is required.
Can you switch mons between tourney games or do you use 3 pokemon the entire length?

I actually did run Rapid Spin on my Avalugg, but it was never used since few people run entry hazards in 3v3.

Most feel tacky and things have been added on, some go over the top (See manectric) While some were already quite barren/simple and got some neat tweaks (Pinsir in my eyes)
They took a fairly menacing Yeti and gave him huge bulk and force, had him root in the ground and just incase any doubt of his typing was there, they stuck some big arse shards in his back. Quite the definition of making something mega
