So, I'll be picking up a gen 5 game tomorrow. It's the only gen i've skipped. Should I get BW or it's sequels? What's the difference between the two?

Might as well get BW2. You'll have access to literally everything available between Gen 3-5.

It's hard to say since playing both games gives you the whole experience, and since B2W2 is a sequel and not an update like Crystal or Emerald. If you can try to get both.

Only play the sequels. BW are utter shit but BW2 completely redeems Gen 5.

playing bw2 after bw only makes it even better
also, bw has some things bw2 doesn't, like backstories and more interaction w gym leaders [spoilers]and a better rival battle theme[/spoiler:lit]
