I like him for being an amoral character in the true sense of the word. He's not evil, he just wants to discover pokémon's ultimate potential. Whether that means performing eugenics or deepening his bond with his mons to allow for Mega Evolution doesn't matter, he'll do whatever it takes. Characters like those are pretty tricky, so props to Gamefreak for managing to make him sympathetic.
