For about 3 years, we were closer than I was with my family. She slept in my bed every night, curled up in a little ball next to me, and it was the cutest thing ever. We played in my backyard a lot and played "tag" where I grab her toy and run and she had to try and grab it.
One day, though, I decided to run a little more than around the backyard. We had a large driveway, slightly angled, and I thought it would be fine to play on that for a bit. I tripped, and I dropped the toy (it was a ball) and it rolled down the driveway. Fast.
Too fast. When she got it, she turned, looked at me, and it is burnt into my mind: she wagged her tail and started walking when she got hit.
We were at the vet for almost a whole day before we finally put her down. I was in shock for days, and didn't go back to school for 3 weeks. I lost my best friend and was upset.
I am crying now just thinking of her. I miss her, guys.

I had Ashlin for most of her life, she was a stray that I found that had been hit by a car. She was very loved.
Kaedon was my sweet boy, when I put him down I had him cremated, he was 100 lbs going in. I got a cedar pound box that only weights 3 lbs. I still feel like I betrayed him for putting him down, but at least I was the last thing he saw.

Growing up I had a Golden Retriever/Chow mix named Goldie. She was very mean and would snap at and even bite people, but very sweet to me and my family. She calmed down a bit in her old age, too. One day, a couple years after I had moved out to the east coast, my sister called me crying, "You need to say goodbye to Goldie, I have to put her down." Turns out my mother evicted my sister and my sister couldn't find a place to live that would take Goldie due to her biting history. I ran a GameStop back then, and just started bawling in my office. I was so embarrassed to be crying in front of my employees, but I just couldn't help it. To thus day I feel like I betrayed Goldie because she was 12 and still had some years left.
Now, with my 15 month old Admiral I made sure to train her and socialize her properly. I don't want to lose a dog for those reasons again. It hurts to know she'll probably die young due to her breed, but that's what you face when you get a giant breed.

Maya had to go to the vet one day (she had a bit of grass stuck at the back of her throat). They sedated her with 2 different drugs, then gave her a little blanket. To this day it's one of the most tragic things I've seen. Poor devil wanted to stand up but couldn't move at all.

I couldn't take the risk of him biting a child because there are a lot of them in my family. I thought maybe he wouldn't bite again, but I was wrong. After that I couldn't justify it anymore and had to put him down. Turns out the mother of him bit someone, and they say that when the parents have bitten its in the line. I don't know, maybe I just didn't train him enough, wasn't firm enough, but all I know is he was my little baby. I raised him from 8 weeks and watched that little fluff ball turn into a beautiful dog.

It's just that he lost his wife last november right before Thanksgiving and then got diagnosed with cancer last Thursday. They wanted to see him monday and figure out his plan, and he spent the weekend with family and then have some quiet time Sunday and... just passed away. I guess he had time to make peace, you know?
Even so, it was pretty sudden after getting the shock of him having cancer, and it's been an awful time for his kids and my Grandma, so there's some real deep feelings for them on this too. I'm also a bit fearful of mortality myself, since
part of my personality once... bullied (?) me into seriously contemplating suicide a few times in middle school and just these abstract thoughts of "what would it be like to outlive everyone you love" kinda gets me down. However, I've just been kinda too busy to focus on any of this for too long right now.

Took years for me to find out they had been making calls for months about finding a place to take her and humanely put her down. About the worst thing I ever did was go to bed early and forget to feed her in the evening, and if I forgot, my parents always remembered, so she was taken care of and it wasn't a big deal (since she got fed twice by me and once by my brother) except that I -should- have done it even if I was sleepy. I wasn't blameless, but I was 10.
It's just their refusal to talk about the fact that Fe was slowly going crazy like Shadow for fear that it would make me upset just made me more upset because I thought Fe was locked up in a kennel because I forgot to feed her.
I was a terrible fish owner though, I'll wholeheartedly say so. Also if I have kids, they're not going to get fish, because they're honestly a lot of work that kids don't consider. I'd rather take them to an aquarium weekly.

Like, most kids might throw a temper tantrum when told to do chores because they don't want to do them. In my case, I just kinda internalized stress. Like if I was supposed to scrub the aquarium and I was busy helping dad with something instead and have to do it the next day, everything just kinda fell apart. Not to mention that was the hardest job I had, and that I used to love micromanaging time to the point where if something took a lot longer than usual and it was "my fault" I'd nearly have a panic attack.
I was kind of a weird kid like that, and chores were good for me to manage that kind of stress, but at the same time, I kinda don't want to put that stress on a kid when they're already balancing a lot from school, especially considering how difficult keeping fish was.
But of course it's easier to just throw out hypotheticals until the real thing actually happens. Children's eyes CAN be pretty effective.
