Mega evolutions (and Gen 6 in general) were meant to pander to genwunners/casuals, who typically dislike object Pokemon. If you notice, all of the Pokemon that got megas are animals. Even Abomasnow looks more like a yeti than a tree.

The Pokedex entry actually means they tried to evolve Magneton into Magnezone artificially, but it they failed. it's just worded really poorly.
