I tried it today all day and nothing showed up. Yesterday I found 2 shinies before the shitstorm commenced and everal people found shinies using this method, both yesterday and today.
We discovered that shinies can appear not only on the first encounter, but later too, meaning that it is an increased rate, and not always on the first encounter, all assuming the variable does exist.

I was intrigued because of the high number of shinies when "exploring" new safaris. When you explore new safaris, you exit after you find all 3 pokemon, since there isn't anything else to do there. I tought that maybe this could be explained by a sky high shiny rate all safaris have, but then, brute force hunting in safaris wouldn't take as long as horde hunting outside of it.
I then took into consideration the fact that changing safaris once you have hunted alot in one sometimes results in a shiny, and often on the first encounters. I concluded that some safaris have higher chances than others, or that for some safaris, a shiny is a scripted occurence on the first few encounters, to encourage players to explore new safaris.

TL;DR: I came up with it in the shower while thinking about friend safaris.

I tried chain fishing for shinies on a friends Ds in 6th gen. I got the chain to about 50 on both times and nabbed two shinies this way. Horsea and clauncher Rest of the day my reaction time wasn't good enough to keep the chains going. That fishing rod is such a mind game. I keep switching focus between seeing and reacting on sight to just hearing it and focusing on my thumb to twitch. Thumb twitch works better when anxiety and readyness is up and its how I got the first 2 shinies

It's just as David says, except I'd recommend you stay for a few more encounters even if you've seen all three Pokemon.

I really want a shiny chikorita and I am like 9 boxes in. I started at the beginning of the month and barely have anytime to play because I am either going to school, doing homework, or working. thanks, it is one of my favorite pokemon. My brother loves the torchic line so he wanted to MM one, got it within 15 eggs a day or 2 after getting the squirtle which only took him a few days. By far his longest was piplup which took about a month of playing nonstop with the exception of going to school, in the end it turned out with 31IVs in all 6 stats
