New XYfag here, just got the game.

Why are the starting three pokemon so shitty? Should I just wondertrade my starter until I get something interesting, like an Eevee?

It also gives shitloads of Eevees, they're nothing special. Keep your starter, even if they're only good with their hidden abilities.

Just stick with it a while and see if you like it, I feel like a lot of hate for new starters or new pokemon in general is because they're just not used to them... of course when they fail you in battle and their designs don't grow on you, you're free to release it.
