Except it was by pokemon standards. If you don't have Machop, you had to slowly chip her Miltank away with your strongest pokemon because of its great defenses and hope it didn't use rollout, or milk drink.

I'd have to go with Norman. Slaking just hits so hard with that facade, and its hard to get in a lot of damage with the older games. Most pokemon don't learn anything powerful those first 30 levels.

I had a bit of trouble when I played gen 2 against Whitney. But it was frustrating when fighting Clay and having nothing to fight against his ground types. Shit sucks when he outspeeds you and you chose a fucking Tepig as a starter. I had to fight him like eight times apiece when I played on black and white two.

If you picked the wrong starter or didn't like any of x types than you're gonna have trouble against a gym leader with no clue on their Pokemon

She always gave me trouble. The only time I ever was able to get past her gym with "ease" was if I was doing a Mudkip run. Otherwise I always struggled.

I have to go with Clair. Her dragons were way above your level, you were given ice pokes but your team is already relatively set by that point, and if your dudes weren't all paralyzed by the her dragonaires, her kingdra had (practically) 0 weaknesses and smokescreen.

the kalos gym leaders can be a bit challenging if you don't use the EXP share or Amie/Super training or lucky egg. You end up very underleveled.

This is just going to depend on which gym leaders people weren't properly prepared for. Since you were more likely to do dumb ass shit as a kid or when the series was new to you it's also most likely going to be from the first game you played.

After I finally beat her by ragegrinding my Croconaw up to level 25 or some shit, I learned about the Machop trade. Never have I been so butthurt. Surprisingly, I never remember having trouble with Clair. I think it's because I always went to go catch Lugia before facing her.

Norman is always a nightmare whenever I play through Gen III, I was not prepared for the differences in Bugsy's team when I first played SoulSilver, but aside from those, I was much more frustrated by gym puzzles than the battles. Fuck Pryce's gym.

You know what, just fuck Johto's gyms in particular, wow.

The only thing that would qualify to me is a leader that STAYED tricky even once I got used to how the game works and what the gym leaders use. There is no gym leader in the entire series that does this. Once you know what you're doing, no gym leader should be a problem for you, ever. If you wanted to know what gym leader would be the most problematic if you are inexperienced, then you should've rephrased the question. I'm not sure how to answer that since I sort of agree with the above that all gens had bosses that would catch you off guard if you didn't know fully how to use the type chart against them. My money's on Clair because Kingdra's only real weakness is Dragon. If you try to use Dragon vs another Dragon, you will get flattened almost certainly. (unless you had the foresight to put a dragon move on something that is NOT dragon type) Your best hope in most situations is to use those normal weaknesses as best as you can. You'd be surprised how much you can dish out for normal damage. I consider this incredibly advanced thinking, though.
