IP Address: That's you.
Gateway: That's your router.
Subnet Mask: This determines the network you're on.
DNS server: That's where you're connecting.
Now let's say you wanna connect to Nintendo servers, and their DNS is something like 022.201.225.001. Auto-configuring the DNS would mean you're connecting to that specific DNS server.
Now let's say you go set up connecting to a fake GTS server. You'd set the DNS server to 088.194.229.105.
If you're connecting to the 088, why would the connection bother routing to the 022? It's not being pointed at that direction, so it won't bother.
