So I want Pokemon but I can't really stand handhelds. I just have a hangup towards them and have missed out on a lot of Pokemon games because of it.

Anyway I'm looking at the 2DS since it's the cheapest but I'm wondering if it's a good choice over the other two models for Pokemon, or does it now matter that much?

If you're only playing at home and don't care that it looks like a Fisherprice toy, go fot it.

If you take your handheld with you outside a lot, I wouldn't reccomend it since you can't really fit it in your pockets.

I have a 3DS XL and I never use the 3D. It adds nothing to the game and just kills the already-short battery life even faster.

A lot of people will tell you that the 3D is unnecessary, and it's true.

I think I'm one of the very few ones who does tend to turn it on. Definitely not on Pokemon though. I do it more with games like Super Mario 3D Land.

It's true you won't use the 3D, but the 2DS is a shitty design.
You can't slide it into your pockets in your pants, if it falls on the ground it's done for, you can't just flip it into pocket mode to save battery, it's just inconvenience and nothing more.

I heard that it's actually built pretty robust because its main target are kids that are going to drop everything.

You can play D/P/Pt/HG/SS/B/W/B2/W2/X/Y and all future 3DS games on a 2DS. I'd say go for it.

From what I've heard it's not that good
+ you can't close it to prevent scratches
+ no 3D option
+ Doesn't really fit in a pocket easily, you can put it in a bag with a case. (to prevent scratches)
+ uncomfortable shoulder buttons because it's to long
+ you have to support the whole weight from left and right sides, with other handhelds you can rest the bottom in your palms
+ price difference isn't that big

But well comfortability is subjective so maybe look at a store model for that.

I think I'll just hold off and get an XL then. There's no logical reason why Pokemon has to be the only game I play on the thing, so I may as well get the best possible experience.

Not sure if you knew already.

And if you don't mind buying used, check out amazon warehouse deals. Sometimes XL consoles pop up for ~$130 - $150. Technically used but these are usually items that have some packaging damage and end up being untouched, or open-box returns that are in good condition.

The 2DS is TOO cheap. It's liable to collapse into a heap of dust the moment that you pick it up.
Just get a used 3DS for the same price, if not cheaper.

3D was a mistake. The technology just wasn't ready for it. Nintendo needs to stop jumping the gun in its desperate attempts to stay afloat via gimmickry. It's getting extremely intrusive to their overall gaming experience quality in several ways, including cost value and graphical performance.

What are screen protectors
Also even by closing it, the normal 3DS has the awful problem of scratching your upper screen if you don't have the protectors or something to put between them.

And the shoulder buttons, maybe you got that from a really little kid, because they are on a good distance for an average hand.
