BW1 feels like a complete reboot of the series with entirely new Pokémon (until postgame) and a more in-depth story. You either like it or hate it.
If that's not your thing then at least try out BW2. It has a fair amount of throw backs to the first games but has a huge variety of Pokémon from Gens 1-5 as well as a fucktonne of postgame content.
XY is pretty okay too.

I picked up Black/White just to see what Pokemon is like nowadays and its surprisingly good. You can skip BW2 if you want since there wasn't a cliffhanger in the first one. XY plot was a letdown imo. I felt it was really corny. The post game Looker missions was worth the buy.

B\W can be sort of skipped - its storyline fucking sucks. B\W2 is quite better, aside from a slight feel that the entire storymode is an apologize for B\W horrible blunder.
But both games are short anyways, why not play both.

The pokemon storyline is about as good as watching the anime. If you think it's legitimately good just kill yourself.
Pokemon is about the gameplay, and since the main game is easy for babies, pokemon is about the multiplayer.
In short save money and play showdown.
